Ski Near Lucerne
Hi
I am hopeing to go skiing in in Switzerland between Xmas and NYE. Is there any snowfields I can make a day trip to from Lucerne that time of year that will have reasonable snow? I'm a pretty average skier. |
Places you should be able to ski at and are easily reached by train are:
Engelberg Andermatt |
The problem is not so much whether there is a place but rather which of the numerous places to ski is the best. In Switzerland practically every unforested slope is converted for skiing in winter.
A favourite of many people close to Lucerne is Engelberg (www.engelberg.ch) with skiing area extending up to 3000 m - so rather "snow safe". Otherwise there are dozens of smaller areas within 1 h train/bus distance from Lucerne, but not as high up so the chances of snow new year are not 100%. |
Sörenberg, Oberiberg/Unteriberg, Stoos, and more - ask the Luzern tourism office when you get there about conditions.
|
I prefer the smaller Andermatt over Engelberg/Titlis because it's more quaint & local with hardly any crowd/tourist. The hill villages are beautiful as well. They served fantastic roesti of all sorts at the local folks restaurant at the bottom of the run.
On the other hand, Titlis gives you somewhat of glacier terrain at the top, very long runs and also has a lot more international crowd/tourists than Andermatt. |
Titlis offers skiing from about 3000 meters down to 1000 meters at the parking lot. It can be skied directly, without stopping.
There's a lot of capacity too, as well as capability. Something for everyone, it seems. Check into the fare for one trip tickets. It may be cheaper than buying a whole day ticket. It's great if it's a dicey weather day. Your tickets are useable later. Blackduff |
