we're going to italy to ski in march for just 4 days
must fly into Milan and want to know which of the closest resorts to Milan would be best for 3 advanced skiers---good town ,great skiing
courmayeur,cervinia or ?

Several years ago when we lived in Germany, I use a Ski Europe type book to figure out where and when to go. I see on Amazon that the current issue of "Ski Europe" is not highly rated but that there are a bunch of other books that are.

Hi rms - I'm not sure that either of those resorts fit your criteria.

Would you consider going a little further and heading to the Dolomites?

Courmayeur: Great town Sking for intermediates. Great sightseeing. Great food.

Crevinia: Wide open runs But also mostly intermediate. No town ambiance.
But...You can ski over to Zermatt. Takes all day however.

-the dolomites will have to wait until next time due to friends who want
proximity to the airport in milan
- and thanks john ,it's going to be Courmayeur and we'll hopefully ski over to Chamonix as well.any hotel reco's

Not a bad choice:

You do not have much time so I will try and highlight our trip.
Stayed at the Palace Bron. Very good value, 4 star property,bit off the main path. Upper part of town. Had a shuttle to get you to the lift.
Skiing:
Try and get a ski-tour over to Chamonix. Called the "Valley Blanche", Unique ski experience! Awesome scenery. YOu need a guide to get you around the crevaces
For a final night dinner try and get to the resturant that serves a 40 course meal!Thats right! 40 courses. Fun time for a group. Damn, I cannot remember the name but if you are interested I will pull my notes and get it for you.
If you have a free day..probably not..try and see the Gran Paradiso Park
Wide open vistas and where the cross country skiers go.
And you will adore the people an the food!!

question though--if hotels are half- board ,meaning breakfast and dinner i guess,wouldn't that mean you'd just be eating in the same hotel restaurant every night?

Hey:

1/2 Board is the way to go! Great value. Yes, you eat in your hotel evry night. BUT some hotels (ours) if you tell them in advance, will either comp you for that night or swap a full lunch instead of dinner.
I will find that resturant for you

La Maison de Filippi Outside of town. Not the best food in Italy, but a fun atmosphere for a group. Finish the night with the Special Drink that you all share out of a 6 nozzle crock!
