Ski in Austria

Hi,

Greeting from Pakistan.

I am planning to come to Austria in early/mid April. I want to experience Skiing. I will be there with my wife and a 2 year old kid. Well initially we will go to italy and from there most probably from venice will come to austria.

we plan to stay 4 days in austria. our main interest is to experience ski for a day or 2.

I would need your suggestions:

1. route from venice to austria (innsbruck/salzburg whichever is most convenient and more nearer to ski resort)
2. resort which gives equipment on rent
3. not looking for a hi fi resort. it should be normal to pocket :)

Thanks

April is quite late for skiing in Austria, where resorts are mainly lower-lying and the season finishes well before that. Exact details do vary according to snow condition (some years, Easter skiing is quite possible) but it's difficult to predict. You will be better off with high altitude resorts in Switzerland and France, with access to glacier skiing.
In Austria, there are a few high altitude resorts with access to glacier like Obergurgl.

you need to be up on a glacier, there is one above Zell-am-see

Check Kaunertal, Pitztal, Hochstubaital, Hochzillertzal, Kitzsteinhorn.
For all these places you have first to go from Venice to Innsbruck.
Engage a skiing instructor for the whole family, otherwise you will not enjoy it and it could even get dangerous.
Equipment rental will not be a problem.

Venice to Innsbruck is probably your best option. From Innsbruck ski buses run daily to Stubai glacier and back. Or you stay right in the Stubai valley, Neustift or Fulpmes have excellent hotels.

Thank you for the advice guys :)

one more question: any idea how much they ask for equipment and a day of skiing and also a day for instructor?

Count about 100 EUR/hr for the ski instructor, 100 EUR for skis and shoes for 2 pax during 2 days, plus the rates for ski clothes.
A ski pass for 2 days at Stubaital costs 60 EUR/pax.

Try to come earlier in the year if possible. If you're a beginner skier, you might want to go somewhere else. Skiing in the Alps is difficult in most resorts, and there are better places for lessons.
