Sixt Rental Cars

Has anyone ever rented a car from Sixt Rental Car company in Eurpoe? They are based in Germany. I booked a car through Economy Car Rentals. They booked the rental through Sixt and I hope they are reliable.

Anyone with any experience with them would be appreciated.

J62 Aug 14th, 2008 03:30 PM

Sixt is one of the biggies in Europe, along with Europcar, Hertz and Avis. I have always found them to be just fine.

All the cars I've rented have been relatively new, so I never had an issue with reliability.

galeforce Aug 14th, 2008 03:34 PM

J62: thanks for the Info. I feel better now. I have never rented a car in Cz. so don't know what to exppect

cmeyer54 Aug 14th, 2008 04:06 PM

My husband worked in Germany for 6 years and rented exclusively from Sixt. he had great service, great cars and nothing but good things to say about them.

oinchats Aug 14th, 2008 08:53 PM

I used Sixt a few years ago and had no problem. I have used Hertz the past 3 years as their rate has been better then any competitor. That is for a pick up in Switzerland and drop off in Italy.

kerouac Aug 14th, 2008 09:15 PM

Sixt is a major operator. Nothing to worry about.

Gordon_R Aug 15th, 2008 12:42 AM

Yup, Sixt are very well known in Europe. I use them exclusively when I travel on business. Much better than Europcar who we had before IMO. For some reason I seem to get quite frequent upgrades with Sixt as well.

kerouac Aug 15th, 2008 04:38 AM

Upgrades are all a matter of fidelity. I continually go to the same Europcar agency in Paris with my subcompact category A AutoEurope voucher (2 or 3 times a month), and they will pretty much give me any car I want because they know me. Of course, usually I really do want the cheapest and smallest car -- a Smart if possible -- but the last time I was doing a lot of kilometers, they gave me an Alfa Romeo.

galeforce Aug 16th, 2008 03:36 PM

Thanks everyone for some great information. I rented through Economy Car Rentals out of Greece and they quoted me a price of 188euro for 8 days with everything included (insurance, etc.) That was the for the compact VW golf, etc. That was the best price I could find.

I've read the fine print but don't understand about the cancellation fee after a "revocation" date. What might that mean?

galeforce Oct 10th, 2008 04:04 PM

Underhill, Not sure what that means. I don't find it on my agreement from Economy Car Rentals.

Ozziez Oct 10th, 2008 08:50 PM

Underhill, not having your policy in front of me I can't be certain, but I would guess that a cancellation fee after a revocation date means that if you cancel the car reservation a certain number of days prior to the actual rental date you will be charged a cancellation fee. Does that make sense?

Underhill Oct 11th, 2008 08:39 AM

Yes. I wish Sixt had a toll-free number I could call to inquire!

Ozziez Oct 11th, 2008 05:05 PM

Wy don't you try e-mailing them? Go to the "contact" tab on their website.

Underhill Oct 12th, 2008 09:12 AM

I'll look for it again. Thanks.

Underhill Oct 13th, 2008 11:02 AM

FYI, I just got a VW Passat class car through Sixt in Nice for under $300. We would have paid $460 at Autoeurope.

suze1 Oct 13th, 2008 12:28 PM

In 2009 we'll be renting an economy car in Avignon and dropping off in Nice, is there a rental company better priced than another in that area. Last year we rented from Gemut when we went to Germany, they seem to be in that area but I'm not sure for France which car company would be the most economical.

nametaken Oct 13th, 2008 12:41 PM

TrySixt;they are likely to be the cheapest.

JoyC Oct 13th, 2008 03:57 PM

I'm trying to rent in Germany next week through Economy Car Rentals. It gave me a peugeot or alfa romeo or similar. Would this be booked through Sixt?

Thanks.

Sher Oct 13th, 2008 05:27 PM

I rented a car through Economy Car Rentals in June for Portugal.
They placed me with Sixt.
I would use them again.

JoyC Oct 13th, 2008 05:37 PM

Hi Sher,

Do you know what it means by "CDW with no excess" (no deductible?). So when I present my AMEX, where normally I would decline the CDW offered by the car company,I should accept it this time?

Thanks.

PS. We're heading to Portugal next summer, so its good to know you had good experience with Economy Car Rentals.

Sher Oct 14th, 2008 02:36 AM

JoyC.
Let me tell you about the "no excess" as provided by Economy Car Rentals as they explained it to me.

Rent the car through Economy Car Rentals. Pick up the car at the car company they place you with.

Decline the excess insurance offered by the car rental company when you pick up the car.
Use your Amex or which ever card you choose.

We were placed with Sixt in Portugal so I will use this example.

Sixt placed a hold on our credit card for the excess. That is, the rental with Sixt covered all of the
CDW except for a portion of damage costs. This is the excess.

If you have an accident, you submit the damage claim to Economy Car Rentals and they reimburse your credit card for the damage costs.

Actually, this works the same way if you used your credit card for the coverage. If you had an accident, you would submit the claim to the insurance part of the credit card and the insurance carrier your credit card uses would cover the damage and reimburse your card.

I called Economy because I didn't quite understand how this worked. When you pick up the car, the company will try to sell you excess insurance, but actually Economy Car Rntals is providing you with this coverage.

I printed up the rental agreement that Economy sent me so that I would know exactly what I would need to send them in case of an accident.

JoyC Oct 14th, 2008 05:12 AM

Thanks for the explanation Sher. I got a little confuse there.

In short, Economy Car Rentals, the broker, would be providing the insurance, and just as we have done before, we would decline the CDW offered by Sixt, the car rental company. That's much clearer.

Thanks again.

Sher Oct 14th, 2008 07:07 AM

You got it.

suze1 Oct 14th, 2008 09:56 AM

I just looked up the price for 8 days rental on the sixth web site. When I put in the pick-up place in France, Avignon TGV for May 1,2009 it states the station is closed for a bank holiday. I realise this is a major holiday in France but when I emailed the TGV train station this was their answer.

Yes, there will be rail service on the TGV from Paris to Avignon on May 1st.

Anyways, now I'm kinda scared, does anyone know if the Avignon station is opened for sure on May 1.

Underhill Oct 14th, 2008 01:40 PM

Rail service is different from car-rental agencies housed in the station. If the rental agency says it's closed, that's your answer, I suspect.

suze1 Oct 15th, 2008 07:59 AM

Thank you, that makes sense, I'll just rent from another car agency

galeforce Oct 15th, 2008 03:35 PM

When I rented from Economy Rental Cars, you could have the car delivered to you for an extra fee. I believe they could also do it even if the office was closed or not during their normal operating hours. It just cost more. Our car ultimately came from Sixt with Economy being the broker

Steve_Nocks Nov 4th, 2008 08:19 PM

I just found this site here www.carrentalsgermany.de and find the prices very reasonable, any1 got any experience with this?

galeforce Nov 8th, 2008 08:07 AM

Steve,

When we rented from Economycarrentals.com we rented a car for 8 days in the Czech Republic and the total was $261 USD we got a Mercedes "A" Class. The site you mentioned shows the same car but the price was 423 euros for the same amount of time so that's about $541 USD.

eurotravler Nov 8th, 2008 01:34 PM

Underhill - try this toll free number for Sixt - 1 888 749 8227

Underhill Nov 8th, 2008 07:50 PM

Thanks, eurotraveler.

Steve_Nocks Nov 10th, 2008 03:08 AM

Hy galeforce,

true, in czech economycarrentals.com are indeed cheaper, but carrentalsgermany.de shows 1 week Mercedes A class for 240 whilst the other price is 295....

But thx for the other one, gotta use that next time in prague ;)

iris1745 Nov 10th, 2008 04:33 AM

Hi All; I am just checking rentals for Croatia and find a big difference for the same car with these companies. Insurance is covered with 'no excess' with both companies. It's conceivable each company could place us with Sixt. For a Scoda Octavia, pick-up in Zagreb on June 1st and drop-off in Dubrovnik on June 10th, economycarrentals.com price is 623 euros [803 US]. But for economycarhire.com it is 312 pounds [492 US]. Help, am I correct in my math, or am I doing something wrong? THANKS Iris P.S. It seems like going direct to the Sixt web site their insurance is all inclusive too, but [with excess].

Underhill Dec 18th, 2008 01:34 PM

So far, so good: our rental was actually a tad less than the original amount; there was no additional charge for having a diesel; and the whole experience was hassle-free. The Sixt policy is that renters return the car with a full tank of gas, BTW.

lanejohann Jan 26th, 2009 12:12 AM

we used sixt - colleague recommended them after driving ireland

we drove croatia

was all ok
smooth pick up from zagreb

but
you have to ask questions and know the questions you need to ask
for eg
we were told by sixt at the airport that if we went to montenegro and asked to pay extra insurance that sixt would reimburse us

upon arrival back at the airport we showed our receipt and were declined
we were supposed to inform sixt that we were intending to go to montenegro before we left

they didnt tell us that when we were picking up
so we lost a few euros
no big buck but still it makes you a little mad sometimes

another thing - make sure that when you get the car someone shows you how to work the damn thing
the manual had no english
this was nuts i thought - letting us out on the road with no idea how to even get the petrol cap off
there i was reading through the croatian instructions with a dictionary - great start

sixt was again the cheapest deal for norway - our next trip
but no sooner did OH inform me of their rates than the offer disappeared
and we have booked with hertz - a bit more money but we can cancel easily if a better deal comes up

otherwise id give sixt a go again- the regional branches can vary of course so you cant judge the whole company on our experience
we had an opel chevrolet
