Six Days to get From Athens to Rome

Jump to last reply

I am in the early but exciting throes of starting to plan our Next Big Trip: my 60th in Fall 2016. This deserves a celebration in the form of a Mediterranean cruise - two, in fact! I am convinced I want to see the Greek islands in a small vessel to get into lesser-known ports and swim off the back the boat, things like that. I really like the looks of Variety Cruises' Panorama II "Aegean Odyssey," with only 49 passengers for seven nights. We would then head to Rome to board the largest ship in the world, Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas (to be launched next year), for a spin around the Western Med for seven nights also. A little bit of both worlds!

The schedules I'm looking at would give us six days to get from Athens to Rome. Where should we go, do you think? What if we flew to Naples and hung out in that region for the bulk of the time (we'd only have one day in port there on the second cruise) A few nights on Capri, do you think? Take time to tour Amalfi and Sorrento? I'd rather not rent a car, so wherever we stay has to have other transportation options - local buses are the best! Then we're only a short train ride to Rome to pick up the second cruise, with a few days there beforehand. Any other cool places I should consider?
