Centro Storico Sorrento Pensione
Can anyone recommend one that would be convenient for a solo female traveller to use as a base for day trips to Capri, Pompeii, Napoli, etc. I don't need anything fancy and the more economical the better but clean is a good thing. I will be in that area in mid May. Is it really necessary to have a reservation? Has anyone had any experience with just winging it down there?

Hi Ahotpoet,
I am travelling solo to the Amalfi Coast in July and staying in Ravello for a few nights and then going to Sorrento to day trip.
I have booked into the Hotel Girasole. Don't know anything about it and can't find any reviews (other than the one in Capri which has good and bad reports) It has single rooms for £50 per night which is good for that area in July.
I would advise any solo traveller to book their accomadation beforehand.
Also try Hotel Michelangelo which in right in the heart of Sorrento and gets good reviews. Unfortunately it was booked for July but may be free mid May.
Have a good trip

I haven't searched in that rate range, but look at www.sorrentomap.com for a wide range of lodging. Good luck and have a great time!

We were very happy at Casa Astarita B&B in Sorrento. We paid 75 euro for a double room in Nov -- would probably be a bit higher in May. It's pretty small, though, so it may be booked already.
You can see my writeup on the place in my trip report at:

Sorrento was jam-packed with tourists even in Nov. I would definitely not show up without a reservation in May.

Check out www.hostels.com/en/it.html
The accommodation is either double rooms (which works out about 50 E per night) or dorms which works out from 16 E per night (don't know what age you are but you sound adventurous and you would meet other solo travellers).
There are 3 I looked up in the Centre of Sorrento and they looked quite nice (if I were younger I would go there myself).
There are also some in Naples

OK folks, ladies and gents, young and old, adventurous or not, after reading nonnafelices advice not to just "showing up" I got on the stick and followed a few new links provided by cambe (I am 50ish. How old can you be??????)and came up with Mami Camilla's for 60 Euros a night. They have glowing reports on tripadvisor.com and their website (mamicamilla.com)has links to articles in the LA Times and other write ups. There is a cooking school on site which means GOOD FOOD! I am so flipped out. While doing all my research I even broke open a bottle of limoncello we had sitting around the house.
Thanks to all who answered and Nonna, I read your trip report from beginning to end. It was great.
