Sistine Chapel - Do I need to pay/be part of organized to tour to see this?

Hello,

As I am not taking a formal tour of the Vatican (other than the Scavi, below ground) would I be able to get to the Sistine Chapel without taking part in a tour?

Thanks!

Yes, the self-directed tour takes you there and you can linger as long as you like.

Yes; just buy a ticket for the Vatican Museum.

If you go to the Vatican Museum in the morning the lines will be incredibly long. I mean long. If you drop by about 2:00 or later your wait is considerably short, and sometimes you can walk right in. Depends on the month you go. But the tours always go in the morning so this sight is very busy.

FYI, the line to enter the Coloseum is long too. Most of these people are waiting to just get in. If you spend 3 euros more you can get a audio self-guided tour and you can walk right in. Most people don't buy this for some reason, but it will save you an hour in line.

A Hint
Be sure to take binoculars to see the wonderful detail on the ceiling of the Cistine Chapel.

Despite all the good answers, I feel like this still does not convey to iloveitaly - - that the Sistine Chapel is just one room (albeit one very spectacular room) in the U-shaoed circuit through all the main galleries in the Vatican Museum. To make this "lap" takes 75 minutes minimum, or up to 2 or 3 times that long - - and you might linger from 5, to perhaps as much as 20 or 30 minutes in the Sistine Chapel.

It's at the turning point of the "U", and all that comes before... and after... is on a (nearly) spectacular par... indeed, for my money, I would trade 15 fewer minutes in the Sistine Chapel for 15 more minutes in the hall of maps (not suggesting that anyone makes you "move on" in the hall of maps, nor really anywhere in the museum).

It's just not a/the destination in and of itself that many think it to be.

Best wishes,

Rex
