Sissinghurst
 

Friends and I want to take a day trip from London to Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens. Does anyone know of coach tours or how to get there by train? Thanks.

Sissinghurst: It has been a few years since I did this, but a friend and I did some garden tours with a company called "Evan Evans." I believe that we booked with them in or near Victoria Station. I think that if you "Google" that name you will find some info. They are a large day-tour company. We also took another day tour with them that went to the Cotswolds. There was another company, too, called "Gentle Journeys" which I also investigated. Hope you can find some current information. Ciao! mhm

There are tours to Sissinghurst such as here http://www.britishtours.com/day-tours/south.html or others. I don't think Evans Evans offers Sissinghurst now. But as you can see from the link - a small group tour is VERY expensive.

How many are you? I'd definitely consider renting a car for a day and do it on your own. Not only will it save hundreds of $, you can spend as long as you want there, plus have enough time to also visit Scotney Castle Garden or Great Dixter, or Hever or Chartwell . . . . .

It's been awhile since I've done this as well, but I don't recommend public transportation, or do so only with caution.

You take the train, then a bus, then it's still a mile or so walk through the woods (lovely, but long) to the house and gardens. So either take a taxi from the station (if they're not already taken) or try a tour. Or rent a car for a day and knock off a few sights in the area.

I say this not to dissuade you, but just to stress: Don't just try to wing this one, or go late in the day. Plan it all out and you'll have a wonderful day.

Just the kind of info that I need. One of my party of three is willing to drive and I was exploring transportation to some desired spots if we didn't rent a car. We are spending 7 days in London and my friends are wild for gardens and Sissinghurst was one request.We are going to Edinburgh and York after London and then head south. We want to go to Haddon Hall but I'm not sure if we can get there easily with public transport. Am I right? My husband and I visited Haddon Hall two years ago and just loved it. I would love to go to Hardwick Hall also; but of course two years ago we did rent a car. Thanks.

If someone is willing to drive, then that's definitely the way to go.

Bring/rent a gps with European maps to make it easy. Pick some stuff along your route. There is no shortage of gardens and sites in that area. Stop at a country pub for lunch. Way better than a tour.
