I noticed on "Dublin Trip Report..." you mentioned there are pubs outside of Temple Bar for the over 30 crowd. Can you recommend some over 30 (even 35)crowds perhaps with traditional music for the week between Christmas and New Years? Thanks a bunch

Not al are trad music but here are some place I would go. Remember All Pubs are closed Xmas day and will not open until the evening of the 26th (St. Stephen's day).

For Trad music in Temple vbar - why not they have a musical Pub crawl early that starts here is Oliver St John Gogherty upstairs http://www.gogartys.ie/. gets too packed for me but fine for 1-2 drinks.

Outside Temple Bar try:

O'Donoghue's - bit crummy old bar but fun to see anyway http://www.odonoghuesbar.com/.

You coulkd make a night of it and have dinner in the Hooley room at Johnny Fox's. Book taxi's to and from here in the Dublin Mountians http://www.jfp.ie/ It's touristy but can be a laugh.

The Brazen head is a great place and supposedly one of the oldest pubs in Dublin 2 bars nice fireplaces and trad music with a heated courtyard. http://www.brazenhead.com/

OK these above are trad. Now where I would go are as follows:

Casual old style pubs:

Davy Byrnes, Duke Street

McDaids, Harry Street (I was Here last sat good Pizza in Pizza Stop around the corner and no bookings needed)

Bruxelles, Harry Street (nice outdoor area)

Regular pubs/bars
Hairy Lemon - I don't know why I like it but still do. They always play good Music here. (was here last week)
Market Bar - Old meat Warehouse serves Tapas and good beer can get loud with acoustics. (I was here last Sat for a drink)

Sheehan's - Chatham street.

Doheny & Nesbitts, Merrion street nice pub good lunches legal crowd after work. (going here before Xmas work lunch on Fri)

Wine Bars
Enotecca della Langhe - Over the millenium bridge Northside in Bloom Quarter. Go there if you love italian food and wine. Fab. I wish I lived here in the apartments above....I would be a lush :-) (Was here 2 weeks ago)

Ely - Wine bar and restaurant on Ely street off Merrion Street.

Peploes - Posh eaterie but can eat reasonably in the bar and wines by glass or bottle. Excellent selection of wine. (was here last week)

Upmarket
Westin hotel basement - Jazz Fri and salsa international crowd Sat. Great cocktails & hopping sat.

Cafe en seine - Huge lush french style with palm trees. Good place for single people and great buzz. Go for coffee in the day here too.

Ron Blacks - Cool trendy...not sure i like it but do go once in a while

Westin Hotel Lobby and Bar is like a fairy tale with beauticul blue and white lights. Do NOT order just a white or red wine. Ask for a list by glass or you will get done over. Still a nice place and piano player in the lobby. Also try the Clarendon Pub for lunch/dinner and or Drinks. Cool new place, not big but nice atmosphere.

I'm not a great fan of Temple Bar myself and unfortunately its often hard to find traditional music outside of that area, particularly around Christmas for some reason.

Two places that come to mind that are nice and a bit of a change are The Anglers Rest in Chapelizod - its a few miles outside Dublin, in a very nice area and they often have music there - you should ring them before Christmas to see whats on - +353 (0)1 820 4351

The other one is also outside of the city - in Howth, you can get a suburban train there, its called the Abbey Tavern - www.abbeytavern.ie - again check with them whats on over Christmas.

I brought Canadian friends of mine to Taylors Three Rock, just recently, and they had a ball. Taylors do a great night of live music with nice food. Check out the website below for details.

Sorry the L:obby bar was in the WESTBURY hotel not the Westin.

The abbey tavern would be nice and you could get a bus or Dart out. It has nice seafood but may be a chilly walk in the winter.

Taylor's three rock i have never been to but i think they run along the same lines as Johnnie Foxes.

Oh another place for trad(ish) is the Quays pub in temple bar. Used to be so much better before the renovated the whole place but there is a guitar singer and some musicians most nights. we popped in Thanksgiving for a drink for old times sake. To touristy for my taste but may be fun towards the weekends for 1 or 2 drinks.
