Simple campsites in southern Europe
 

Hi! I’m a young 82-year-old planning a six-week train tour of southern Europe by Interrail. I am looking to pitch a small tent in Italy, Greece, Croatia and other ex-Yugoslavia countries and beyond. Can you please help me to find some less sophisticated campsites n this region that don’t boast a water park, activities, entertainments and other such attractions. Thank you!

In Croatia, campsites were often not near town/public transport, but for years I have remembered the lovely campsite I saw at Jelsa, on the island of Hvar. It can be reached by catamaran from Split. I would go to a website devoted to camping for the most up-to-date info, good luck!
In Italy, I noticed lovely campsites near the town of Orbetello (train and bus accessible) and along the Cilento coast.

Wow, that's really cool!

I guess you know that beyond Italy there are very few rail lines in Greece and the Balkans you'll have to travel by bus or ferry most of the time. It may make some sense to use an Interrail pass for Italy since you can get the cheaper senior rates, but it would be a waste of money to use it for Southeast Europe.

I can recommend a great campsite(exactly the type you're looking for) in Bar, Montenegro - a place I'm sure you'll visit since it is the terminus of the amazing Beograd - Bar railway.

Thank you very much, BDKR. To fill in my story, up to now I have been flying almost every year to Southeast Asia, and decided this year on ecological grounds not to fly, so Interrail was the obvious alternative. I had originally planned to tour northern Europe, but because prices would be so much more than in Asia (e.g. 8 euros per night at a guesthouse, a couple of euros for delicious street food or little more at restaurants) over a prolonged period, I opted for the rather cheaper southern route, camping and looking for homestays on arrival.
I hope I will make do with the railway lines available to me, and certainly I am planning Belgrade-Bar, so your suggestion is extremely welcome. Do you think it is advisable to book the Olive Garden campsite in advance for mid-September? (I will be planning my journey virtually day to day, so precise dates are unknown and it will always be difficult to give much notice.)
