SIM phone cards for Europe - can I use my Cdn BlackBerry?

We are travelling for 2.5 weeks in Scandinavia and Germany this June, and were wondering if I could just get a pay as you go SIM card for my BlackBerry (I already have a travel kit for plugging in the recharger, and we often use the phone for word games with the kids, directions, looking up info, etc.,) However, we know almost nothing about cell phones - this BlackBerry is our first mobile in a v. long time!

So, I'm interested to know
(a) if I can get a SIM card for my BlackBerry Bold
(b) if we'd be able to use data services as well (or if it's so expensive that we would be best to stick with phone only)
(c) what your recommendations are for a prepaid card -- we'll be in Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden (and Finland for a layover).

I figure the best thing is to turn off the "push" so that my work mail doesn't go to my BlackBerry. If it's possible just to

We are staying at a hotel the night before our cruise, so we'd have time to order something now and have the hotel hold onto it.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts

we were looking at travel sim to cover us during our trip- the rates seem good
but
if i get the new phone ( iphone)
i will have to pay for it to be unlocked by apple
then it has to be linked to the internet the whole time- expensive when roaming

then i have to try to get apple to unlock it when i get home

all up the unlocking costs about 150 - dont know how much it costs to get it back to local coverage

so im not getting one
it will be a target for theft i feel
and just not worth the expense

ill stick with my old nokia which has travelled reliably with me before ( triband for the usa)

hope you get some answers re the blackberry
check about the unlocking
this is different from just being on roaming

hi jaysfan,

fellow canuck here ... you'd have to get your phone unlocked ... i'm assuming you're on rogers since you mentioned you have the blackberry bold. once unlocked, you should be able to purchase a SIM from a compatible carrier in europe (check this first!) ... there should be an option to turn off your e-mails ... e-mail options/e-mail settings - send messages to handheld - select 'NO'.

i don't think rogers will unlock the phone for you. so, you'd likely have to go to an independent retailer ... this may void your warranty so you'd want to check that (if you care and/or are still within the warranty period).

one option: callineurope.com ... look into that. it may work for you.

Yes, we're on Rogers. I don't want to void our warranty especially since it's a phone from work. I'm thinking buying a phone and SIM cardfrom callineurope would be a good idea - we could use it during our trip in June, and my parents could use it in August in the UK and France as well....
