Sim cards, St. Petersburg, Russia

Just wondering if anyone has any up to date info on this; where to buy them, best coverage, etc. Thanks

In normal circumstances I recommend that clients get a local cell phone (MTS or Beeline, for instance) and use a calling card (Zebra) for international calls. This is what my family does as well (we live in Moscow and the US, and usually use the same phone/SIM in St Petersburg unless we will be there for longer than a week or two, in which case we get a local SIM card).

As for where to purchase the SIM card, you can easily find stores selling them; rare is the English-speaking clerk, though. In addition you need to have your passport on you (not the hotel registration card); the process usually takes about 10-30 minutes.

This recommendation is for travelers to Moscow and St Petersburg; if you are going to another region I may have a different recommendation.
