SIM card for Central Europe along the Danube

Has anyone determined the best options for obtaining a SIM card for an unlocked smartphone when traveling within Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary? Any advice would be appreciated. We depart the US in about three weeks.

You can do roaming within Europe at capped rates. Just pick up a SIM in your first country and make sure it is well-loaded with credits. Where are you going first? I can probably make some suggestions about SIMs in Austria and Germany.

I would like to piggyback on that question...Arriving in Krakow, then on to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. Have an Apple 4s. My carrier, Verizon Wireless, informed me each minute of received or sent calls will be charged at $1.99/minute in the above countries. Does not seem economical to obtain a SIM card in each country. Many people use Viber, which is carried through wifi, but the person on the other end must have the application as well.

No, you don't need to - just get one in the first country, as I said. In Austria, there is an Orange shop near the Stefansdom, where they will set up your phone for you. Or get a Yesss! SIM from Hofer supermarket - cheaper but you have to set it up yourself, in German. In Germany Lebara is an excellent SIM for travellers - cheap rates abroad and they have English-speaking operators. I think you can recharge with a CC over the internet. Otherwise cheaper operators are O2, Vodaphone (T-Mobile is expensive), or just go to a shop like Saturn and they will set you up. Or a cheap SIM from a Drogerie or Supermarkt like Fonic. The price you were quoted for roaming is if you keep your Verizon account and use it O/S. It is not that expensive if you just use your German or Austrian SIM abroad.
