Silly Question re: Turin Accomodations
 

It's silly because I KNOW there aren't any for the days that I'll be able to travel (Feb. 24-26).

Here's the deal -- I'm going to London for 10 days, which includes that weekend. I'm looking around at different options for a quick side trip with a friend. And, since I've been living under a rock, I just found out that that's the final weekend of the Turin Olympics.

My question -- Is it absolutely silly to think we might be able to find a hostel or cheap hotel with reasonable accessibility to Turin (out of town or in Milan, maybe?) this late in the game? I think I know what the answer will be, but I thought I'd hear it from the experts first...

If you can't get in there and can't find other vacancies in Turin, a good alternative might be Genova (- less than 2 hrs by train). The AIG hostel there is good ...

I'd also try Milan. It is a lot closer than Genova (where my in-laws live, and we're from Torino), and there are trains going from Milan to Turin pretty much hourly. Milan is much larger and full of budget hotels.

What about Mondovi? I spent a week there in 97 and it was lovely.

It will give you access to accommodation in and around Pinerolo, a small town in the mountains that will have train access to Torino every half hour or so. There are still B and B spots available!

I think Genoa (Genova) is a wonderful city, but maybe a bit far too commute to the Olympics, Milan is nearer.

Most of Piedmont is sold out by now, even all the little towns and villages within an hour of Turin, but you may be lucky and catch some rooms inbetween shifts so as to speak as some people may be leaving after a week or two, some website which specialize in finding Olympic lodging are:

Otherwise I would suggest Milan, plenty of hotels, and about an hour by freqeunt train to Turin.
