Silk Thermals - Best Deal?
 

Well, I've decided to spring for a pair of silk thermals for my Prague and Venice trip over New Year's.<BR><BR>I know they run around $60-$70 for a set. I don't mind spending the money but I want to get the best bang for the buck.<BR><BR>What brand do you think is best and why?<BR><BR>Where did you buy them and how much were they?<BR><BR>My husband also needs a pair.<BR><BR>Thanks.

I've bought cuddle duds at discount places (Century 21 in NYC, Marshall's, Ross) for low prices. They work just as well as the silk ones I bought before for $80 at Nordstroms.

Try the lingerie depts of your large dept stores. Or if you can get the brand name, call and find out where they sell them.<BR>I got silks in Saks Fifth Ave years ago in NYC.They finally got worn out, too many cold nights:)

All the major department stores carry Cuddl Duds (spelled as I've written it). They're silk on the outside with a light cotton layer woven on the inside. They are a lot less expensive than what you're thinking about paying for other brands. I've worn them in the coldest of places (minus 0 degrees F) and they worked great. <BR><BR>Stores don't usually carry them at this time of the year, but the salesclerks in the lingerie departments will be able to tell you when they will be stocking them. I bought mine at Macy's. <BR><BR>There are several different styles (long-sleeved, short-sleeved, vee neck, etc.) and they run about $20-$25 per item. I've tried several different brands of silk thermals, and feel that Cuddl Duds are the best value.<BR><BR>I also heard that Target sells a brand that looks and feels exactly like Cuddl Duds for even less $$, but have never tried them.

Cuddl Duds aren't silk, they're nylon.<BR><BR>

Look at REI or LLBean.

Have you looked through the Winter Silks catalog? Also have a website at http://www.wintersilks.com<BR><BR>I'm only familiar with their lighter weight products. Also check with LL Bean or Orvis.<BR>

Liz,<BR><BR>I didn't realize that Cuddl Duds are nylon. I think they're very comfortable and warm. Are the silk made products warmer?

i've been a happy customer of Winter Silks, the thinnest variety. They breathe, they wash out easily in the sink, they dry fast.

I've been happy with silks from LL Bean, REI, and Lands' End. All good quality. One thing, though -- the pointelle ones (a pretty kind of weave with little holes in it, rather than just a plain weave) are nice and soft but do tend to snag.

Lands' Ends silks are thicker than LL Bean's for the same or similar price. I have turtlenecks from each and the Bean one is not thick enough to wear on its own. REI's are good quality, too (bought a pr for brother last Christmas--about $25). I've found thinner versions at Ross and TJ Maxx (about $15 per piece), and I've seen them online at www.campmor.com, too. They are truly an investment and worth every penny at whatever price I've paid, as far as I'm concerned.

Second Mariarosa's suggestion that you check out Sierra Trading Post. We've bought many things there over the years and have always been pleased (ski clothes, gloves, hats, boots, several kinds of thermals).

I like the silk camisoles and the silk capri pants (don't show at the ankle) from LL Bean. I also like the camisoles with 3/4 length sleeves from Wintersilks (don't show at the wrist). I like the LLBean silk thermals better but I really like the 3/4 sleeve camisole - and Wintersilks has a larger selection of styles. So you should probably look at both web sites. Most Cuddle Duds are a blend of cotton and nylon - they are very nice too - I wear them a lot at home - but they are not as thin, or lightweight, or warm as silks so I prefer the silks for travel.
