I am asking about just 1 ride on a local bus. So I assume I buy them in a newsstand or tabacchi. Also Waldo is saying the 32 bus and then the 140 bus. I gather either of these will take us to this view? Thanks

Blueeyedcod Apr 8th, 2015 06:11 PM

It's the #140 (definitely not the 32) which will take you to this beautiful view. Just look for a tabacchi / newsstand near the bus stop - probably the San Carlo stop will be a better choice as I can't think of a tabacchi/newsstand at the back of Castel Nuovo.

(Jan47ete - the OP does not need an Artecard - that includes museum admissions etc. and transportation - it's not what they asked for)

I interpreted it differently. They had been there before 2 years ago, saw the "main" sights, were going to be back there for 3 days, "so what other sites to see in Naples?"

I was there for 2 days in November and thought that for their second visit with 3 days they could and might want to venture a little outside Naples--the Artecard! And who's to say they wouldn't want to go back to the Archeological Museum again?

Just saying.

Hey Blueeye!-I stand corrected. It is the 140 bus to Via Petrarch. The 32 bus takes to you to the Galleria, San Carlo and Piazza Vittoria. I guess I don't know everything. I remember I picked up the 140 bus at Piazza Vittoria, after alighting from the 32, and crossing the Piazza.

I'm not overly fond of the Artecard - at 32 euro it's expensive - especially with the most expensive site on its list being Pompeii - and that's only 11 euro. A lot of places on the list cost 4 euro and some are even free - the villas at Stabiae for example. You would have to have an enormous list of sites for it to be financially worthwhile and in three days, I doubt it would be worthwhile. Even with the public transportation included, Naples' trains/buses are so cheap anyway I still doubt the card would pay for itself.

Some information for the OP is here - maybe it will suit you? Worth investigating anyway.

(Waldo - lol - was trying to find a bus map for the OP but the only one I could find had Posillipo chopped off so no use at all)

Thanks! First trip I had looked at the Arte Card and didn't think it was a good value. I have been looking for a good site on transportation and so far haven't come across one that seems esp good. Any suggestions?

This artecard may be a better option - it's Naples only, costs 21 euro and includes all transportation.

The UnicoCampania ticketing system changed in January and daily tickets are only available for the Naples area (in other words, there are no day tickets for travel to Pompeii for example). Rather than direct you to the UnicoCampania website, this site gives some good help. It's also a great site for Naples in general.

We're in Naples now and would love to seee the view mentioned above. We are at palazzo Decumani in the old town. Not sure where the San Carlo bus stop is. And in which direction do we take the bus to get to Via Petrarch? I have not been able to find a site with the bus routes to figure this out. We do know where Piazza Garibaldi is. Thanks

Hi - I ran thru all the responses but didn't see anything about Villa Poppaea, between Naples and Sorrento. I've been to a LOT of Roman ruins but this villa was the best for up close and personal and has much still preserved in terms of the wall decorations. and you can walk right up to them and touch them. Not that you would, of course, but the photos can be fantastic. It was utterly fascinating. It has very few visitors compared to other spots. I just wish I'd had more time with it. But - also - don't forget the pizza margherita!

Waldo Apr 23rd, 2015 10:59 AM

You get on the 32 bus at Piazza Garibaldi. It's the terminal for the bus, so you need not worry about direction. It starts its journey there. Ask the driver to let you know when you get to Piazza Vittoria. It'a a large Piazza near the water (everything in Naples is near the water)! Go dirctly across the Piazza, right on the corner where you will see trolley tracks. This also a bus stop. Several buses stop here, but wait for the 140 bus. Get on it, and when you get to Via Petrarc, you sure will know it!! Stay on the bus for three or four stops. (It goes the length of Via Petrarc). Get off the bus, and sit on one of the benches there and ENJOY!!! Maybe Blueeyecod has better directions. The way I just described it is the way I go. Also, there is a booth at the bus terminal in Piazza Garibaldi. I'm sure the attendant there will be gracious enough to give you directions.

Yes travel-- You are close to TOTINO's pizza place. Ask around, and taste the best pizza ever.

Blueeyedcod Apr 23rd, 2015 01:27 PM

You're a bit of a walk from Palazzo Decumani to the San Carlo bus stop (which is near...Teatro San Carlo lol). I would ask your hotel - they may have more specific directions or know of a stop closer to you, perhaps somewhere on Corso Umberto.
How's it all going - hope you're enjoying Napoli - your hotel is a beautiful one.

Thanks all! We enjoyed Naples this go round although we did not see many sights. We went to the Opera house and did the tour, if you want to go on the tour be aware that many of their time slots are allocated to large tour groups. The day we were there there was one time slot open in the afternoon. We've toured many opera houses and music halls and this one was not a stand out, but a nice one. Tour in English and Italian is about thirty minutes.

Tried to go to Procida but that was not to be. We walked to the port and it turned out the 10:45 am ferry doesn't go this season. Next ferry wasn't until 3:30 so we skipped. We did make it up to the view for the second time and it was just as striking, we took the funicular up and walked over to the Castle to see Vesuvius across the bay.

Appreciate all the suggestions and instructions.
