Siena vs. Sorrento
Hi, I'm just wondering which location would be good for day trips. I was in florence last summer for a week. I got to see some of siena and san gimignano. I was thinking of 2 weeks in siena, but now I'm thinking about Sorrento,I can't decide.

Why not do both? Do 3 or 4 days in Siena and then go to the Amalfi region and visit Sorrento, Pompei, Capri, Positano. I think Siena is nice but nothing like the Amalfi coast!

We did 3 days in Siena and then a week on the Amalfi coast staying in Positano. Siena was nice but Positano is incredible! Siena is very close to Florence, but Sorrento and the Amalfi coast is quite a bit further (but worth the trip)
Just west of Florence is Montecatini Terme, an incredible spa town that some compare to Palm Springs here. Mostly Europeans visit it to "take the cure." There is a special restaurant up in the mountain overlooking the town, Pietre Cavate, that is incomparable. Many hotels in Montecatini, too. It is known for its mud and healing waters. Also, the Saturnia Spa not far from Rome is an interesting place to visit. Known for its waters to swim in. |

I like the suggestion of splitting your time between both, but having just done that, I want to warn you that the trip from Siena to Sorrento will take most of a day. Without a car, it will take much longer, as the train connections from Siena are not direct. However, you have 2 weeks time, so do split time between the 2.
We left Siena on a Sunday morning around 8:00 am and I thought we would stop at Pompeii before driving on to Positano. Rain and the time of day changed our minds, and we returned to Pompeii another day. You have a taste of Tuscany from your visit before, so you know what to expect if you spend a week in Siena with day trips to surrounding towns. Amalfi coast is totally different, and an experience you are sure to enjoy. I personally liked Positano better than Sorrento, but everyone who has been has their own preference. |
Hi maria,
With 2 weeks, I suggest a couple of days in Siena and vicinity, a couple of days in Naples and a week on the AC - Sorrento (I know it isn't on the coast), Positano and Ravello are often recommended as bases. We stayed in Prainao. You might find the Naples/AC part of my trip report helpful. http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34451044 |
