Siena, Tuscany & Lake Como

We will be returning to Tuscany, but not renting a car. We will be using a tour guide to get around during the day and figured that Siena might be the best base camp since restaurants are plentiful. Would you agree or station yourself at some Villa in the countryside? Any suggestions for a good hotel in Siena?

Have never been to Lake Como. Any suggestions for hotels or for that matter should we stay in como or some other town.

Siena hotels: Palazzo Ravizza Request a room with a view overlooking the garden in back. Or Hotel Santa Caterina

For reviews on this site of these hotels, type in their name in the search box above. For Lake Como, type in "lake como hotel".

Enjoy your trip!

I had a bad villa experience in Tuscany, so I would shy against that (villa was built in 1166, and not remodeled, cleaned, or painted since then).

While at Lake Como we stay in Varenna. The ferry can take you to any point on the lake for day trips. Hotel rooms there range from 100E a night on the square to 300euro for waterfront rooms. There are good restaurants all over the place.

At Lake Como, stay in one of the towns up the lake like Varenna, Mennagio, or Bellagio. The town of Como is not nearly as pretty or scenically situated as those smaller towns to the north.

At Lake Como the north-south trains run right past Varenna (so this will have some importance to you). We have stayed in Varenna before and will be back in June. The mid lake is an especially beautiful area of the world.

You can hop on the car ferries that work the Varenna, Meaggio, Bellagio,Tremizzo box (very convenient) plus the other regular boat schedules.
