Best is always a private taxi - or do you mean cheapest?

And you do mean Florence's airport with mainly regional flights and not the main international airport serving the Pisa-Florence area - Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Pisa, near the sea.

If not wishing to spend a fortune, and if you are flying out from Florence, then bus from Piazza Gramschi in Siena to the Bus Station in Florence followed by the airport bus (Which I seem to remember leaves from outside the railway station)

Thanks. I will be flying back home to US from Florence Airport Peretola ? and prefer to take public transportation from Siena. Are there any trains running between the two cities?

What time is your flight from Florence and are you going to Florence on the same day you are flying out?

There are trains, but if my memory is correct, the bus station is more convenient in Siena than the train station because it is right in town.

The SITA bus from Siena to Florence costs just a few euros as does the bus from Florence to the airport, just a few miles north of Florence - so you could probably save $100 or more and if not in a great hurry.

If going to Pisa's international airport then you could take a train from Siena to Empoli and change there for trains terminating at the airport, vai Pisa Centrale.

Trains do run between Siena and Florence but take a round about route via Empoli and thus take longer than the bus I think which heads direct over to Florence.

The biggest issues with the train is that you have to get from the city centre down the hill to the station, as as PalenQ points out you may need to change at Empoli.

The bus is as quick or quicker, costs about the same, ends up virtually in the same place (Santa Maria Novella bust station is directly across the road from the train station), but most importantly leaves from a central location in Siena.

I presume you are changing planes rather than a direct flight as I was under the impression that Florence couldn't handle big jets suitable for direct flights (I could well be mistaken, but have only ever seen 737 /airbus 320 size planes there.)

If you are staying in Siena in the center, you want to take the bus as it departs from there. The train station is not in the center and you would have to take a bus or taxi to reach it.

The bus is faster (if you take the rapid bus - 75 minutes)than the train (1:40) also. It's more comfortable and your luggage is stored underneath. The trains are old regional trains with no amenities and usually no AC.

You would change to the airport bus when you reached Florence. There are no flights from Florence to the US. Flights departing Florence require a change elsewhere in Europe and usually depart very early (6 or 7 am). You won't be able to depart Siena by public transport and make your flight.

There is once daily bus service from Siena to Pisa.
