Siena to Assisi and Gubbio
We will be in Siena from Sunday to Friday (with a Tuesday trip to Florence). In Siena, we have a cooking class scheduled on Monday, a Chianti wine tasting tour experience set up for Wednesday, and are hoping to get to Assisi and Gubbio on Thursday. We have debated renting a van for the day ourselves to drive our group of 9-- or locating another tour guide. Can we drive to Assisi and Gubbio and see both in a day? Would you recommend finding a guide for this trip or driving it? First time in Italy for all the adults. The 20-something's in our family have all been before but never driven. Thanks already.

Does anyone have over ideas about side trips (1/2 day) from Siena? Thanks.

It's about a 2 hour drive from one to the other. Personally I think you would be better doing one or the other. Assisi is a really great town with the most incredible frescoes in St. Francis' Basilica.

We were based in Assisi last year and took a day trip to Gubbio. It took all day. Great trip, loved Gubbio (lucked out--festival day!), but it was definitely an all-day event. I wouldn't think you could do both Assisi and Gubbio in one day.

Hope - I agree with Sandi. You really need a full day just to see Assisi. I don't think you'd need a guide ...

Gubbio is too far---Assisi is doable but plan to spend some time.

Hi Hopeline,
I visited Gubbio and Assisi, staying 1 night in each last Sept. I agree that Assisi is easily a full, long day. Gubbio is a hilltown somewhat different from the others and could possibly be done in less than a full day, but I remember the drive between the two was about 1 1/2 hours (on the back roads). It would be too much to do both in one day. Don't hesitate to drive, but a one day rental could be quite expensive. |
