Siena Hotel under $200 convenient with auto?
Will be in Siena mid October. We currently have reservations at the Hotel Antica Torre. Am concerned because cannot get any feed back on hotel AND we will have rental car (4 people, bags, etc.). Love to hear if anybody has any suggestions that may be more convenient - under circumstances!

Duck

Good morning, Duck
Have made only two attempts to drive into Siena and both failed, the main
problem of coming in from the north
and then again from the south was finding legal parking place. Or perhaps
I gave up too early aand returned by bus the following day...
However here are a couple of url's to
surf, one had a very good map of Siena
www.hotelbook.com/
www.hotelguide.ch/
www.venere.it/
www.turismoverde.com/english/enhome.htm.
www.comune.siena.it/
www.virgilio.it/ (IT search machine)
Good surfing
Richardl of Hickory Hills, IL....

We just came back from driving through Italy. I had the same concern with Siena. We stayed at the Piccolo Hotel Oliveta. Rate was L220,000 including breakfast and parking. It was located just outside of the walls (Porta Roma entrance). Very simple, clean accomidations with a very friendly staff. We had no problem with the extra five minute walk into/out of Siena. All-in-all, very convenient for both accomidations and car. Italy was very easy to drive around and the towns and details very well marked. You must take a half day to drive up route 222 toward Florence. Unbelievably lovely wine country and a great drive.

Piccolo Hotel Oliveta
0577/283930 phone

We got the tip from Frommers guide book.
I will recommend again the Garden Hotel in Siena which does have parking as well as a small swimming pool and restaurant. It's not too central, but a pleasant walk to the Duomo. There is little parking in Siena since it is very medieval with very small streets, but that's the charm of it. There are limited spaces near the old walls and at the Duomo, but very iffy finding a spot. I'm sorry I don't know the Antica Torre but I wouldn't count on them having parking. The Garden can be faxed at 011-39-0577-46050. Enjoy Siena!

I recommend the four star hotel Athenas, it is inside the walls, but close to the walls and has free parking.
Breakfast is excellent, it is not a small hotel, nor a huge one, ....they reserve the upper floor for individual travelers, and if you do not care to have breakfast with groups, they let you have breakfast alone, before the groups arrive, because they have several breakfast rooms.
Our room had a great view being in the upper floor, was big, pleasant, well decorated, with certain flair. We enjoy it very much, ...and let me tell you at the begining I almost did stay because I thought it would be to noisy, but again the upper floor was perfectly quiet and we paid I believe aprox. 150 to 160 including breakfast and the free parking, and we didn have to drive a lot to find it , it is near one of the doors. Then you can walk every where.
5 minutes to the Duomo, and 6 or 7 to the Campo , perfect. Also extremely neat. Good luck.

This is the address of the Hotel
Athena, Via P.Mascagni 55,53100 Siena
Fax 0577 48153, Phone 0577 286313, our room ,( I found the little card they give you) was 802. It is important to ask directions to get to the hotel, because if you go into Siena through the right city door ( which I believe is St Marcos, but I am not sure) it is absolutely easy to get to the hotel, park your car, and leave it there...
By the way while in Siena check for the little charming signs that show you in which area of the city you are, the Athenas Hotel is in the panther zone.

We never stayed at the Antica Torre, Duck. It is reputed to be one of the most charming 3-star hotels in Siena, very small and housed in a typical XV
century tower house. It lays in the southeast corner of the old city, relatively close to the walls. Access is ether through Porta Romana (straight in, a right in Via del Refugio, then left) or Porta Pispini - Via dei Pispini, Via dell'Oliviera and Via Fiera Vecchia (don't remember if street is one way, though). The distance from the hotel to Piazza del Campo is about 500 meters.
Unless the hotel has a garage somewhere nearby, you'd be in trouble ... there are no parking lots in the neighborhood that I know of. You should definitively ask them about it.
Should you decide switching to the Athena, Graziella is right: just look for Porta San Marco - Duomo, cross it and take an imediate left, skirting the walls. The hotel parking lot will be on your right shortly before you get to Porta Laterina.
The Garden is a bit too out of the old town for my taste (1,5km from Piazza del Campo). Should you decide going back to the hotel before dinner, you'll spend about 90 minutes each day strolling back and forth. During the Palio week it could be an option ... the old town is a zoo and nights are quite noisy.
Another option you may consider is the 3-star Chiusarelli. It is conveniently located near the San Domenico church, a 300 meters stroll to the Campo, through the main shopping street. It's a nice restored 19th century villa with most rooms overlooking an internal garden. It has a small private parking lot. Should you arrive late in the day and find it full, no problem. The hotel will take care of it (90% of Siena's available parking space is in the immediate vicinity). It's a piece of cake to get to the hotel. Just follow the signs to the stadium or to Piazza San Domenico (intercity bus stop). Reservations in the Chiusarelli may be done online at
http://web.tin.it/chiusarelli/indexita.htm
We always book without breakfast (should cost you Lit 140,000 for a double) because we prefer having it at a coffe shop overlooking the Campo instead.

Paulo
