The Duomo isn't fancy, but it's a great location & good price. I was pleased with my room and even had a view of the Duomo's roof and tower.

I had checked with the Duomo and they had no vacancy for the day we need. Any other suggestions please..

Try Palazzo Ravizza. Just steps away from the main drag -- lovely garden for dining al fresco.
Sera, thank you for the info. I e-mailed them 2 times and have not heard back from them. That is my favorite choice so far.

Gary, I recommend the Palazzo Ravizzo as well. We stayed there three days last October, and it was great.

The rate was more than we paid for other places, but it was in a great location, half board, and the parking setup behind the hotel in a locked lot was a real bonus in a congested city.

Also fabulous views of the countryside from the back side of the building. I couldn't stop taking pictures of the glorious scenery out our window.

We also had trouble getting e-mail responses from the hotel. They seem to do better with fax and voice phone. That's what it finally took for us.

My only complaint about the hotel - and it was a big one - was that they seem to use 25 watt bulbs in all the rooms. The poor lighting drove me nuts, as I couldn't read at night or plan the next day's itinerary. Check out your room before you accept it when you arrive, and make sure the lighting is acceptable for your needs.
Mary Fran
Thanks for the info. Did you have to do the half board thing? What should I expect to pay ? I hope they e-mail me back. I have difficulty dialing international.
Thanks again, Gary

IF THE PHONE IS +39-0577-280462 WHAT EXACTLY DO I DIAL?? SORRY TO BE SO DUMB ABOUT THIS..
GARY

Grasshopper Mar 30th, 2003 09:19 AM

Gary, For direct dial try 011-39-yada yada. 011 gets you the international line, 39 is the country code, the rest is the phone number.

Thanks Grasshopper... i think it is my cellular that is the prob.. thanks again

I thought at the time that the half board thing was mandatory, but I've read since that it's negotiable. You can try. I had my heart set on staying there and so didn't push it.

We paid 227 euros per night (EEEEK!), certainly more than we paid any place else, but we felt it was worth it, all things considered - dinner, a great location, and, most of all convenient, safe parking, which made side trips to San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Montalcino, and Voltero much easier to arrange, knowing we'd be able to be on the road quickly and be assured of finding a parking spot when we returned tired and crabby.

Gary, If you are willing to walk :15 to the Campo, then find Piccolo Hotel Oliveta--just outside the Porta Romana.
He is a cool guy--nice place too. You will pay about $120.

Gary: My friends and I did the half-board and we were pleased with the food -- and the service was great.

GARYNFLA Mar 30th, 2003 01:56 PM

Sera, I am crossing my fingers that they have room. the "rants & raves" here at Fodors are very positve.I will call them in the morning. I called today but it was too late in the day to book.

sera Mar 30th, 2003 03:10 PM

Gary: Good luck! And have breakfast in the garden when you go.
