Siena: Disabled parking

After reading earlier posts, it appears that there is a parking area near the Duomo in Siena that is available for disabled people. We have a disabled parking "hangar" with the blue-and-white symbol and use that wherever we go. Even so, I have heard that there is a contact telephone number in Siena for people who are looking for authorization to park in that area. My questions:
1. Is the "hangar" all that's necessary to drive in and park there?
2. Or is special authorization required?
3. Where does one enter the city and what is the route to the parking area?
I hope these questions are reasonably clear and look forward to getting a clear understanding. Thanks.

If you are talking about a hang tag, issued in your state in USA, denoting a disabled driver/passenger, I have heard that they are not honored in Europe. Perhaps someone else has more definitive info than that.

Yes, the US disabled plaquard works. There are not nearly as many spots available in Siena as you might find in the US. We saw some half way between the large parking lot and the campo. Good luck. Worst case, park in the regular parking lot and ask one of the restaurants to call you a taxi to deliver you back out afterwards. Siena is mostly car free but taxis can deliver you close to your destination.

There are some earlier posts on this subject, and they say that only EU-wide issued placards are valid.

Actually, Italy is now a party to the EU agreement that honors the blue and white identifier. Even so, I have contacted the authorities in Siena for clarification about parking near the Duomo. I also have a phone number to call if for some reason I get no response to my email. From my research, it appears that some of the major population centers have made special provision for handicapped folks.
So I'm waiting to further information and will post as received.
