Siena day trip from Rome?
 

Okay I've done the search thing and haven't been able to find the answer, or proper thread to post this question in.

I'll be in Rome on holiday for a week. Looking at potentially doing a day trip to Siena. However looking on raileurope.com, the trip would be 3 1/2 hours each way with a change at Chiusi (wherever that is).

Is there a quicker way to get there from Rome? Bus perhaps? Is raileurope incorrect?

Also looking at going to Assisi instead, but there were only afternoon trains.

Yes rail europe is correct as though Chiusi is on the main Rome-Florence line from there it's a slow sideline to Siena. Don't know if there would be direct buses. There are trains from Rome to Assisi in the a.m but you may have to change once. Assisi is a much quicker day trip. For better schedules than RailEurope, go to the www.banh.de German Rail web site, which gives schedules for all of Europe and is easier and more reliable than the www.trenitalia.com Italy rail web site and look for Rome Termini-Assisi schedules in there. I'm sure there are bus tours to Assisi from Rome and maybe direct buses. For closer in but fantastic day trips consider Tivoli Gardens and Hadrian's Villa, both near each other in Tivoli just few miles east of Rome, direct trains and buses. Hadrian's Villa is to me the finest Roman archaelogical sight i've seen and the Tivoli 'water' gardens are also fantastic.

Coronado, if you check trenitalia.com it will give you the schedules, times and fares ..
There are quite few trains going to Assisi during the day..
For example there is a train that leave at 8:14 AM and arrive in Assisi at 10:24..if you travel at this hour you will not have to change train .
