Siena-day tours from town
 

I see lots of day tours one can take from Florence. What about from Siena?

We were there in October and loved the town - however, we had simply pre-reserved a car at the Florence airport and did our own day trips from Siena. I don't know of day tours from there, although perhaps a hotel there could arrange them? (although, they might exceed the cost of a car rental). Driving the area presented no challenges at all, it was even easy to find our way around. We did pick our hotel partly because they have a free parking lot (Palazzo Ravizza which we would recommend highly) and parking is otherwise difficult in Siena.

Nearly all day trips (buses, guided tours, etc) depart from Florence. You could book them from Florence and just take a taxi or bus from Siena into Florence. That'll be a hassle though so you might want to base in Florence, and not Siena.

around Siena there is Monteriggioni and San Gimignano. Day trips from Florence tend to include: Pisa, Lucca, Siena + the two listed near Siena, Leghorn (Livorno), and Chianti (the wine country), farther trips to Assisi and Perugia and some more distant to Venice, the Amalfi Coast, and even Rome.(not advisable, 1/2 a day is not enough for Venice or Rome)

Hi Native New Yorker, about six years ago my friend and I spent 4 days in Siena and 4 in Florence. In Siena we stayed at the Palazzo Ravizza which is highly recommende on this board as jo-ann suggests. We rented a car (friend was driving) but we became frustrated. A couple at the Ravizza had taken a tour with COUNTRY TOURS of Siena so we did the same the next day. It was well worth the money. Went to Pienza, Montepulciano, and Montalcino stopping for lunch. Guide was wonderful. Their website is still active.

There are lots of tours/buses from Siena to nearby hill towns such as Montalcino, San Gimignano, etc. There are also lots of bike tours. It's about 3€ to take a bus to Montalcino one way. Here is a bus map of the various lines from Siena.

For times/service, find the bus number on the map and then find it on this schedule. There is not as much bus service on Sundays and you need to know what the various symbols/legend mean (school days, summer, etc.). I don't see them listed in the pdf, but I have the actual schedule book which does list them so if you want to know a particular one, just ask.
