Siena: Activities and Food- only one night!

We'll be in Siena Sept. 11-12. What are your "musts"?

What are your interests and why did you decide to go to Siena?

The Duomo is world class.

Good question, NYTraveler. We've heard it's a beautiful place that would fit in well with our Venice-to-Rome itinerary. We're curious about it because of its historic architecture and because it's said to be more peaceful and serene than some of the other cities we're visiting.

We're not big "tour" people- we like to wander and explore. We appreciate good food (though we're on a budget, so we have to be careful!) but we aren't very interested in wine or coffee. (I know. I know. We're missing out!) I love seeing unique local products (crafts, food, art, music...whatever a city is proud of...) and my husband just loves historic and religious landmarks.

What do you recommend?

In Siena there is a very important painting called The Allegory of Good and Bad Government. Your husband might be particularly interested to see it. Your guidebook will tell you where to find it.

Siena's most important product is wine, but among some other unique crafts of Siena are centered around their annual horse-race, known as the Palio, which dates back to the medieval era.

Siena hosts a lot of concerts in the summer, including a jazz festival. You should stop by the touirst office to see what's available for the night you are there.

Siena is not famous as a restaurant town, so it's a good place to save your pennies and eat something simple.
