Side trips from Rome. . .
 

My husband and I will be traveling to Rome in October and will be staying the Rome for 8 days. Is it feasable to do a day trip to Pompai from Rome? If so can anyone recommend a tour to take? Also, is it feasable to go to Capri for a day?

Pompiee(sp) is a really long day trip. Ostia Antica is a really easy day trip. Once you get tired of the ruins, take the train to the end and have lunch on the water.

There are many threads here that discuss this. Two main choices:

1) Do it yourself via train to Naples, then local train to Pompeii Scavi. Travel time each way about 2-3 hours.

2) Via bus tour. The consensus is that Enjoy Rome has the best option since they don't waste time taking you to factory outlets to buy junk. It's a long day and you end up with 3-4 hours at Pompeii.

Capri is so near Pompeii but takes even longer to get there. If you want to do both, I would recommend making it an overnight trip.

If you REALLY want to see Capri and Pompeii, you could go down to Sorrento or Positano and base there for three days, seeing Capri, Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast. There's plenty to keep you busy in Rome for 8 days, though.

I saw both Rome and Pompeii. I agree that there is plenty to do in and nearby Rome. Rome is amazing!

We saw Pompeii on the way to Sorrento. It took all day, about 9 hours, for our driver to take us from our Rome hotel to our Sorrento hotel, stopping at both Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius on the way. We stopped at Pompeii for about 2 hours and stopped at Vesuvius for about 1 hour. Then we stayed overnight in Sorrento for 2 nights.

In my experience, the ruins of Ancient Rome (Colosseum, Roman Forum, etc., House of the Vestal Virgins, etc.) are just as interesting as Pompeii, especially if you get a private licensed guide to take your family on a walking tour of the ruins.

I came across this site today for possible day trips out of Rome: http://www.astheromansdo.com/outside_rome.htm . I suggest this site only as a reference site where you can get some good ideas of what the possibilities are from Rome.

We used Scala Reale for a tour in Rome and found them to be excellent--very knowledgeable, personable and informative. And the groups are small which is a big plus.

Pompeii is doable, but I would not consider Capri as a day trip from Rome...way too much traveling for one day.
