Side Trips from Prague
 

I'll be visiting Prague in late November. I'll have about 2-3 to take a side trip. A friend recommend visiting areas such as: Karlovy Vary, Cesky Budojvice, Cesky Krumlov and Moravia (Brno, Mikulov). Is anyone familiar with the areas and recommend ones to visit over others. FYI, I'm in my late 20s and am more interested in things like nightlife as opposed to museums (although I'm not against it).

Hi,<BR><BR>I'm not much of a museum person either. I was in Prague in November 2000 and we took a side trip to a town called Kutna Hora. It has a VERY unusual attraction, the Bone Chapel. Three or four hundred years ago, monks uncovered a plague pit filled with bones, and, unwilling to waste them, decorated the entire church with these. The chandelier is reputed to contain every bone in the human body! It's certainly a place to tell your friends about when you return. Also, Kutna Hora is quite close, only about an hour by bus or train and is a beautiful medieval town with a lovely cathedral. You can do a search on the Net to find out more.

I think maybe it's not clear what Fergie is looking for exactly -- I think to travel to another city for 2-3 days rather than short day trips, if night life is the main goal. I've been to Moravia and Cesky Krumlov and wouldn't recommend anyone go there for the nightlife exactly, Prague has better nightlife. I haven't been to Karlovy Vary or Brno but from what I've read of them, you don't go there for the nightlife, either.<BR><BR>I'd suggest Dresden, it's not that far by train (3 hrs or so, I think) and there are plenty of bars, clubs and nightlife there. They also have some superb museums, of course, but I'm not sure the status of those since the floods.

After October the bus day trips stop so you will have to go by car or by train. Dresden is about 2 hours from Prague by train. You can check the rest on bahn.de website for German rail. Use Praha for Prague.

My daughter was in Dresden earlier this week and said that some tourist areas remain closed after the flooding. Also; the train station was closed.

Although we loved Cesky Krumlov and would recommend it for scenery, if it's nightlife you're after probably best to just stay in Prague. We also liked Karlovy Vary, but again, not much to write home about in the nightlife department.
