Side Trips from Barcelona

Does anyone have any suggestions for one or two day side trips outside of Barcelona? Is that enough time to get "off the beaten track?" thanks

Hi Jen,

There are lot's of small towns close by that you can reach by train easily. The beaches are great too. What exactly are you looking for?

I loved figures - a couple of hours by train and the fab Salvidor Dali museum - lots of shops around and a smaller quainter town to check out than Barcelona.

Try Giron, a well preserved medieval town. It's about an hour by train.

Hi Jen:
Depending on what you like to do and when you're going you could try.... if you like to hike and enjoy mountain scenery to die for take the train from Barcelona to Ribes de freser then a cogwheel train into the mountains to Nuria....(or you can drive up to Ribes de freser then take the cogwheel train..it's only just over an hour drive)
2 nights at the hotel at Nuria with a day of hiking and sightseeing
If you prefer beaches and are going from May to late September you could drive over to Tossa de mar....make sure to take some time while your'e there to drive the coastal road from Tossa over to St Feliu de guixols..awesome!
..or if roman (and other) ruins are in your plans try Tarragona, with some time onward from there to the vineyards of Sant Sadurni d'anoia or to the restored monastery at Poblet.
There is so much to do from Barcelona (everything the previous posters have suggested are great !) Girona, Figueres, ....a drive through the extinct volcano area of the Garrotxa,.....or into the hills around St Hilaire.....
Whew, I've explored this area 5 times and have to keep going back to "finish" the area, then find more things so I end up going back again so two days isn't time to see everything, but then neither is 10 weeks!......
you'll find lots to do believe me, off the beaten track is easy, just look for a small road on the map and youll find something interesting.
Regards,
Lynn
