Side trip to Pasteum from Sorrento?
My wife and I will be in Sorrento for four days and want to see Pasteum as a side trip from there. Can anyone suggest an easy way to get there for someone without a car.

Thanks,

Tony

The fastest way is to take the Circumvesuviana Rail to Torre Annunziata (departures every 30 minutes) and then a regular Ferrovie dello Stato (F.S.) Train to Paestum. You'll have to check locally whether there is a change of train stations in T.A., as these are different rail lines and operators. You can check F.S. train schedules at www.trenitalia.com

Tony: We did this trip from Sorrento by taking the ferry to Amalfi, the bus to Solerno and then another bus to Pastem. Gave us a really beautiful early morning boat ride, a very scenic bus trip along the Amalfi Coast, time in Solerno to have an expresso and chat a bit with some locals at the nearby (to the bus connection) expresso bar and an interesting ride through farm country to Pasteum. The connections are all very convenient.
However you do it, don't miss Pasteum. It is amazing. After all the Roman Architecture, it is just so pretty. We spent a full afternoon at Pasteum wandering the ruins, taking in the museum and then wandering the ruins a last time before heading back to Sorrento. Have a great trip.

We hired a driver, Carmine Monetti, who has a taxi company in Sorrento. He stopped along the Amalfi coast for photos and visiting Amalfi and Ravello. (We had already spent a couple of days in Positano) He lectured us along the way on the history of the coast. It was a full
day trip (10 hours). He took the highway back to Sorrento. This was in 2001, and I think it was $120 for his very comfortable taxi. However you decide to do it, don't mis Paestum. It was a high point of our trip.

Excellant idea. One or two days a week there is a special Paestum tourist bus excursion from Sorrento. For public transit options I'll make some comments on train vs bus vs ferry:

Bus: Much of the route is very scenic that you'll want to experience anyway. But the route is so long you can't stopover much - an hour in Positano for instance. Beware of the limited bus route hours. Helpful if you take advantage of a very early departure avail on workdays only. Take care that you know where Salerno-Paestum bus picks up; they aren't tourist oriented.

Ferry: wonderful, scenic, comfortable (incl bathroom) when you can use them. I think Sorrento connection is summer only, but Positano-Amalfi-Salerno ferry extends spring-fall.

Train: I think there are some pitfalls in using some tiny, possibly unmanned stations where you'll have to know how to buy tix in stores. Check the infrequent sched on web.

I tend to use a mixture of bus and ferry. Can get off bus in Positano, stroll down the long hill to ferry port for instance. See Amalfi from the boat, then get off at Salerno port which is right where Paestum busses visit.

P.S. for public busses all the way, you'd have to get one blue bus Sorrento to Amalfi (via Positano - long ride). Then another blue bus Amalfi-Salerno. Then a private bus from Salerno marked "Paestum". Time your visit carefully to not miss last bus return opportunities.

From Sorrento to Paestum via the Amalfi Coast will take a minimum of three hours, not counting connection time:
Sorrento to Positano by SITA bus: 45 minutes;
Positano to Salerno by ferry: one hour (or two hours by SITA bus with a connection in Amalfi)
Salerno to Paestum by bus: one hour
DON'T DO THIS ON A SUNDAY, AS SERVICES ARE MUCH REDUCED.
We did this same trip, but hired a driver for the day. He picked us up at our hotel in Sorrento in the early morning. We cruised the Amalfi Coast. I'd wanted to see the Emerald Grotto (waste of time), Positano, Amalfi, Ravello (bought significant ceramics & had it shipped home) and then onto Paestum. This was too much to do in 1 day. The ole "if I would have known what I know now", I'd have cut out the Emerald Grotto, and perhaps Positano & Amalfi (as those could have been done on our own a different day via ferry). Ravello is not as easy to get to and if you like ceramics include this in your trip. Hiring a driver gives you the freedom to stop when & where and for as long as you want. We had a good lunch in Ravello and it was well worth the money.

IMPORTANT NOTE! If you do decide to visit Paestum via train - you cannot buy return tickets at the Paestum station! You must buy your return ticket at one of the cafe/bars in Paestum before you walk back to the station.
Well worth the trip!
