Side trip into Bosnia from Croatia?

We will be in Croatia in August and it has been suggested that we take a detour into Bosnia to visit Mostar and/or Sarajevo while in the region. Has anyone visited either/both recently? Can you speak to length of drive to reach these cities from Croatian border, safety of drive, situation in Bosnia of late? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

I lived in Kosovo for a year and traveled in that region. I have no info on the driving times between cities but I can tell you the roads in Bosnia are very poor and the driving speeds are not the fastest.

I went thru Bosnia once and after the ordeal at the border, never again. Bosnia driving conditions were similiar to Kosovo and that's saying something. I had no fear of danger while in Bosnia but you will encounter police and military checkpoints.

Slovenia is a nice country and within driving distance. You might want to consider going there as it's more modern and the scenery can be very beautiful. The highways are in good shape and plenty of places to stop.

Belgrade is a big busy city and has lots of luxury hotels. It has a good nightlife, casinos, and many decent restaurants. another option, if you're closeby.

Have a good trip! David

I remember Atlas Tours offering a one day tour to Mostar from Dubrovnik (I didn't take it). The famous Mostar bridge that was destroyed during the war is suppose to reopen this June.

Actually - the opening ceremony is in July - here are some web sites that might be of interest:
