Sicily, transportation

Is it more convenient to rent a car in Sicily than to use bus transportation?

It depends where you're going. If only to a couple of locations easily served by public transport then a car may not be needed. If you're going to smaller, inland towns/villages that are not easily accessible by public transport then a car would indeed be an asset.

It would be helpful if you gave a little bit of information about your itinerary, amount of luggage, number of people in your group.

For the average tourist going to the usual tourist destinations, a rental car is almost never required, and indeed is sometimes a real liability (e.g. Taormina, Siracusa, Palermo). Bus service (combined with train service on a few routes) is more than adequate most of the time, unless you're going to small towns or remote areas (which is usually not the case for the average tourist). The vast majority of tourist destinations in Sicily are served by public transportation. For a few of those destinations, a car would indeed be useful (but not essential).

We rented a car, picked it up at the Palermo airport and dropped it off in Siracusa. The driving wasn't bad although we got lost a lot--I blame my navigator who became completely unnerved. I did all the driving. If we had had more time, I think public transportation would have been okay for us. However, we wanted to get from place to place quickly, so driving was the best option. It was expensive, though.

This is a long way of saying that it probably depends on where you're going and for how long.

We recently spent a month in Sicily (see my Trip Report "Free Lemons and Fat ladies" and used only public transportation with no problems. We used a combination of buses and trains (although buses are more modern and comfortable).

As others have said, it depends on the type of trip you plan to make, but I would not hesitate to take public transportation -- its easy, no worries about getting lost, and you can really enjoy the views.

You could always do public transportation for most of your trip and rent a car for just a few days for any out-of-the-way places you want to see.
