Sicily- please help

I'm a solo female traveller planning to go to Sicily for 2 weeks this July. I'll land in Rome for the first 4 days.
Would that be okay to buy air-tickets while I'm in Rome?
I have to go to Toarmina first. Is it safe to take the bus from Catania to Toarmina?
Thanks for any help!

Hello Wai,

Catania-Taormina is possibly more convenient and quicker by train than by bus. Either are 'safe'.

You can book your flights in Rome or 'online' in advance.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

I took the bus from Catania to Taormina. Perfectly safe and a fun ride, especially approaching Taormina when you go up the winding mountain!

Nutella, I just posted a response to you about driving vs bus in Provence. Now I will ask you!!! Sicily is on my "list of places to go". I don't know when, but I'd like to go one spring or fall. When did you go? Would you give me some advice on how to plan it using buses? Thanks. Happy travels!!

Arlene, thanks for the Provence advice! I'll have a ton more questions soon! I went to Sicily 3 years ago. It was February, pretty cold and hardly another tourist in sight. I had a great time, but I'm sure the spring or the fall will be a zillion times better! Went entirely by public transport. Train from the mainland to Palermo, daytrip by train to Agrigento, bus to Siracusa, bus to Catania, but to Taormina. The buses were great. I didn't have the schedules in advance, just showed up at the stations the day before to see the times, and bought my ticket at that time. I have lots of info on Sicily, so whatever you need to know, just ask!

Nutella (do you love nutella??) how many day did you spend in Sicily and how did you divide up you stay? For me, the fewer hotels, the better.

I believe it was 3 or 4 nights Palermo, 3 nights Siracusa, 1 night Catania, 3 nights Taormina. Remember, it was cold when I went, which sped everything up. In the nice weather, I'd probably skip the night in Catania and add it to somewhere near the beach. I think I missed a lot on the west side of the island, but the ruins at Agrigento and the beauty of Taormina were alone worth the trip!
