Sicily - March/April

We plan to start our 14 days Sicily trip in Palermo, rent a car there. Can't get any Michelin map over here in Toronto. Wandering where would be possible to buy " Sicily - Michelin 365 map " in Palermo? airport, tourist office down town...

Also we are thinking of the GPS. We did not need one in two week Italy trip from Rome to Venezia. Regional Michelin maps were OK. But we took the GPS to 3 week overland trip to Turkey and think it saved us a lot of trouble. We usually camp and not always the directions to the campsites are posted. Would that be an issue in Sicily? poor sign directions... etc.

If YES to GPS can we buy just a Sicily the map in Palermo... have not found just Sicily on website.... any experience with this?

Many Thanks

I think the advice you got on lonelyplanet is correct. There is a newsagent at Palermo airport -- otherwise, wait until you get downtown.

(As also mentioned on lonelyplanet, you can purchase on Amazon, too)

FWIW... My sister lived in eastern Sicily for the last three years and both relied on her GPS and was frequently frustrated by it.

The frustration was because, despite being updated, the GPS didn't fully match the roads all the time. I experienced this firsthand when we went in circles around Piazza Armerina a few times before finally getting on the right road, no thanks to the GPS. (I suppose that can be true anywhere, but she did warn us of this issue the first time we got in the car with her.)

Nonetheless, she didn't go anywhere without it - and she is perfectly fine driving without it in unfamiliar territory in the States.

Many Thanks to you all.... it looks like a map and a GPS will be the best solution :-D
