Florence to Venice: what to see/do along the way for 1 night

We're traveling to Venice after a week in Tuscany with teenagers. We want to stop somewhere along the way and spend the night and see sights. Any suggestions? This is our 3rd trip to Italy but first in this area. We will be driving.

I would stop and spend the night in Padova on the way to Venice. It's a great way to see Padova, rather than as a daytrip from Venice.

Bologna would also be a good choice.

Make a slight detour and visit the mosaics in Ravenna.

Why stop at all---Venice is better than any alternative.
If you must, Verona.

Verona or Vicenza. Not exactly on the way, but not far out of the way and both are perfect for an overnight and sightseeing.

I drove from Florence to Venice for a day trip a couple of years ago, and it was about 150 miles each way.
The first hour drive was very congested up to Bologna, and the rest of the trip was through farm areas as flat as Arkansas rice fields.
You could stop and see the sights of Bologna. Or, you could go up to Verona and the incredible Lake Garda northwest of the city. From Verona into Venice is about 75 miles.
The really best way to visit Venice is to turn in the rental car and take a fast train--2 hrs.
Beware of the camera radars on the causeway going over to Venice, as they don't give any speed leeway.

I love Bologna, Ravenna, and Padua, but I would stop in Ferrara if I were you. Rent bicycles, and tour the whole town by bike - - very doable, and unforgettable, and the kids will love it.
