Sicily in September

Looking for some ideas for my first vacation in Sicily. I will be using public transportation or might consider escorted tour. I would spend about 10-12 days to enjoy few places. I might prefer to travel independently to enjoy more time and not feel rushed by just day trips. Trip might cost less doing it solo so need to be sure areas are safe.

Have been reading about Catania and tourist towns on SE coast. I am active senior and enjoy walking and visits to nature preserves, gardens and museums and walking near oceas views.
I will be stopping off in Irland on return journey so could fly out of Palermo as I try to avoid hassle of transfer from Gatwick to Heathrow.

Would like to get some help planning my route and best places to stay. I like quiet areas away from crowded cities. Many thanks for any help out there.

There are several TRs here from people who have visited Sicily - click on my name for mine. You need to split your time between the east and west coats. I would suggest Ortigia/Siracusa on the east coast. The best quiet place on the west coast is Erice, but it isn't a convenient base. The Zingaro reserve near Palermo sounds like an area you would like, but again, it's not a base for day trips.

Thanks for your response. I will need to stay in smaller towns/resorts where I can get on train or bus if I decide on day trips and its better if I can walk to stations to save on taxi rides. So would not want to be far away from restaurants or shops since I will not have car. I was not planning on much time in Palermo but might spend a day there before leaving.

Will study a map to familiarize myself with the locations you suggested. I need help with itinerary as will spend 2-3 overnights in each area to see and enjoy the places.
