Sicily in a winter
Hi All!
We are planning to stay in Sicily during December and January. Therefore our biggest concern is the heating - is it needed? do the apartments in general have central heating or is going to be heating fan / AC / electric radiator etc? if we rent apartment with separate electricity bill payments - how much is it going to be per month? i have read that price for KWh are 0,5 Euro/KWh / 0,27 Euro/KWh or 0,20 Euro/KWh - why does it varies so much? Any sufficient information will be much appreciated! Kind regards, Yana |
I'd say you'd need heat unless you're very hardy people. Old buildings may not have central heat; many have heating units on the wall. How much will it be? Depends on how long you leave the heat on and how hot you make it - just like at home.

Rather than relying on guesses and obvious statements from this forum that lack precise information, ask those who live there. Google the terms "US Expats Sicily" and follow up on the many links and blogs.

Spent a month in Sicily in January and only needed a light jacket in the evenings, daytime was T-shirt weather. Until, of course, a massive storm came through and then it was jackets during the day - doh. But, it never got super cold (scarf and gloves weather).
Having said that, it would be advisable to follow the information given above and perhaps check with those there now. And if you are trying to save money by not getting heating in your apartment, the maybe you have to revise your budget. How much it will be each month is completely dependent on how much electricity you use - only you know your usage habits. Every apartment is different in terms of the type of heating/cooling system it has - but many houses have radiators on the walls in each room. |
I have lived on Sicily (in the south) for just over two years and have renovated an old house. Many people will tell you you dont need heating on Sicily. Dont believe it!
In the winter it can be very damp and cold and windy. You need heating. |
My daughter spent a semester in Siracusa from January to May. The winter months were cold, damp and very chilly. Make sure you have some type of heating in your rental!

The OP went on the trip a year ago.
