Sicily for 10 days. Need advice.

It's been a few years since traveling in Europe. In the past I always rented a car and traveled independently. I arrive in Palermo Sicily, August 24 and have 10 days of free time. Traveling solo. Don't know much about Sicily. I like seeing ancient sites such as Roman ruins and places with local scenic atmosphere Also I'm single guy in my 30s and like occasional nightlife vibe. I don't want to rent a car. Any advice as to itenary and method of transportation? Bus, rail or book a tour? I'm also interested in seeing Sardinia. Anyone that has itenary including conveniently located hotels, recommended restaurants and transportation options. Thanks.

You might want to take a look at my trip report, although we rented a car; click on my name to find it.

With only 10 days for Sicily, you will need to be EXTREMELY selective, as it has a wealth of ancient sites, places with local scenic atmosphere, etc. A good guide book or two should prove very helpful; I recommend the Rough Guide, although I suspect the Lonely Planet would also be a good choice.

Enjoy!
