sicily and rome

I have planned a 12 day vacation in Sicily for next March into April. I am looking forward to traveling thruout the Island and my itinerary includes Palermo, Syracuse and Taormina along with some time visiting the Aeolian Is. However, I have the option of adding 2 days in Rome. This is a group type travel vacation but has alot of of flexibility. My question is if the extra 2 days visiting Rome is something that I should not miss. The extra cost is about $400 for 2 days in Rome ( 3 star hotel out of 4 ). I am thinking I may be too tired after 12 days of sightseeing and 2 extra days of mostly sghtseeingin Rome may wear me out. Thanks for any advise.

Hi Bob

There is so much to see in Sicily an extra two days will fly past there - don't even think of going to Rome, I believe you will get nothing out of it.

I was based in Cefalù one year - it is a lovely town to visit. Catania and Mt Etna are a must if you have the time. I used to guide a tour called "Unknown Sicily" and it was really fasinating.

These are just some ideas - there are lots more places to see, and you will be there at such a lovely time of the year - enjoy it all!

Go for it. In Sicily you will be most driving or be driven since you are going to be on a tour. In Rome you will mostly walk. Just make sure to limit yourself to those places that are most interested to you. If you are not interested in some places your organized tour will take you just go on your own. Get a good guide book and make your list. Rome is not to be missed. My grandfather spent 14 days in Sicily last March (he is 81) driving (his wife doesn't drive manual) and then he stopped in Rome for five days. His photos from the trip are beautiful and his trip sounds wonderful too. I agree that you won't see everything in two days but it is wirthy to make even a short stop. I know someone who went to Rome four times and she still wants to go back. There is so much to see. I would do it today if I had a chance

Bob, Rome is a great city chock-full of history, art, and wonderful people. If you don't think you will make it back to Italy, then go to Rome. Otherwise, save it for another trip and stay for about 4 or 5 days.

Two days in Rome after 12 days in Sicily makes sense if you are flying out of Rome. Otherwise, I'd spend two more days in Sicily.
