unless you have never been to mainland before, i would use all the available time in sicily..the whole island is a gem! remnants of many cultures [seems that at one time or another everyone has occupied the island and left parts of its culture and architecture there]. people are most friendly, speaking italian is not really necessary. in a way the place is off the beaten [usual] tourist track and this makes it special; we spent 3 weeks there driving around in may some years ago and were enchanted.

Wow, our son will be stationed there too, beginning March, 2003. Will watch for responses to your question as we plan to go May 2004.

When you say stationed, do you mean in the military? Is this in preparation for war with Iraq? Just curious as I am going to Sicily soon.

It is a naval station that has been in Sicily for decades. They are transferred all around the world often as their normal way of doing business.

Enjoy your trip to Sicily! I'm envious and look forward to our trip.

We flew to Milan and just took a connecting flight.

Enjoy Sicily. Fascinating place.
