Sicilian wine?

Hello, we had a Sicilian celebration in the Union Square of San Francisco. It looked to me very Italian: food, music, olive oil. Booklets invited to Italy and Sicily. What I did not see, not even one bottle, was wine.

Wonder why. Is there wine in Sicily worth to be introduced to California? Maybe some strange alcohol restrictions in San Francisco? But they sell alcohol at every street fair!

Anybody knows?

Nobody ever tried Sicilian wine? hmmm.... I hoped it was a popular destination.

Marsala is probably the most famous Sicilian wine..and it's not JUST for cooking!
They also produce some wonderful Moscato dessert wines

I have tried Sicilian wine on a number of occasions. One of the more famous vineyards in Sicily is Regaleali and they make an excellent rose and a very nice red. The winery also has a cooking school with accomodations that I have seen mentioned in Town and Country Travel.

So it's probably some local law regarding wine imports...

Jody, I love moscato! I usually have a bottle or more of Sutter Home Moscato, the easiest to find in San Francisco.

Sicilian wine rocks! Look for a good Nero d'Avola.

Angela_m May 17th, 2005 10:16 AM

Yes, the Nero d'Avola is good and also when we were in Sicily we were introduced to Corvo which is produced from either red or white grapes grown on the island. It was very low-priced and very good, but then again I am not a wine conisseur (sp?). Both of these wines we've subsequently bought here at home.

Thank you Angela_m! One of the wine magazines named a Sicilian Corvo one of the best buys of the year...but I could not think of CORVO! I was going to try to look for one here but I've had no luck...I knew I'd recognize the name when I saw it!

Hi Faina, probably the organization the sponsered this event could not obtain, or did not want to pay, for alcohol liability insurance. Or they couldn't get the temporary ABC license. Sounds like it would have been fun to be there anyway.

Jody -- we live in Chicago and have a little Italian store near our house where they occasionally will have some cases of Corvo for sale. But we also have a huge wine warehouse where I'm sure we purchased some Corvo before and they have a website you might want to check out -- www.samswine.com

I'm sure everyone has his favorites, but you should look for Planeta (red) and Donna Fugata (white). Both are relatively cheap (under $15) and wonderful.

caroline_edinburgh May 18th, 2005 04:44 AM

Planeta also make very good white wines. Not so keen on Donnafugata, red or white. I also endorse the recommendation for Regaleali.

And now that the Supreme court has said it's legal to ship wine from other states..we in the hinterlands might be able to try some new ones!
Thanks Angela!

I've enjoyed every single wine mentioned by all the other posters in Sicily! WONDERFUL wine everywhere. I especially love Corvo and Corleone. We travelled many a weekend to Marsala to load up the back of our car with wine too. Try them all!
