Shrewsbury Ideas?
 

Hi, Fodorites.

Returning to my favorite England, but for the first time ever--in December. Have the opportunity for an arrival day and a half-full day in Shrewsbury around an event, so wondering ideas for the town with my limited time. (Again, via public transport, no car. Fit enough to walk so no issues with steps/walking at this point in life.)

Interested in 14th-19th century history, so have downloaded the PDF for the Shrewsbury Heritage Trail and hoping my arrival day to be able to enjoy some of the incredible architecture. Will have a morning/lunch in Shrewsbury the next day, but on my return, I could extend my stay a day before heading to London if interest demands. Any ideas appreciated.

Also, if anyone knows the town well, I haven't booked a hotel, yet, so suggestions here also welcome. Thanks in advance!

The few times I've visited the area I was driving and stayed in outlying villages so can't really help with accommodations.

But I will put in a good word for visiting Ironbridge. It is about 15 miles SW of Shrewsbury and has lots of fascinating industrial Revolution sites/museums/etc. One - Blist's Hill Victorian village is terrific but it is closed for about 10 days in early/mid Dec so it depends on your dates. But there are several other really interesting sites plus the river/scnery. From Shrewsbury It is about a 35 - 60 minute journey by bus or train+ short bus ride

Shrewsbury is England not Wales!

Darwin was born there, but you can't visit his house. The Abbey is where Cadfael was based and is worth a visit, the covered market is worth a visit. Tons of old buildings to admire.

Oh - true enough ;) I just assumed the 'event' was a bit west over in Wales. -- But if the event and the Shrewsbury stay(s) are all one and the same -- yep -- not Wales.

Whoops! Sorry! My mistake on Wales vs. England. My event is just over the border a bit south in Wales, so that's where my head's been.

Thank you for the ideas. Can't wait to see the town. janisj Been to Ironbridge and the Victorian Town. Totally up my alley. I didn't make the connection that they were in the vicinty. Will be interesting to visit England/Wales in December. I've never been. Hoping there'll be some holiday events when I get down to London in the middle of December, too. If you hear of any interesting exhibits, please let me know! Definitely following your lead to see the new V&A Warehouse. Must think of the items I'd like to see close-up! What a dream.

Just last night booked flights to London late Nov/early Dec and will spend time this week researching events/exhibits. Everything is pretty much TBD so far. I do know I'll see the Turner/Constable exhibition at Tate Britain and Cecil Beaton at the Nat'l Portrait. Haven't decided if I'll do Christmas at Kew again.

Oh, @Janisj, we may be in London at nearly the same time! I do have the Turner on my list, plus I'll likely buckle and buy a ticket for the V&A "Marie Antoinette Style" exhibit. I wondered about Christmas at Kew--don't know much about it yet, but I enjoy being in Richmond and Chiswick very much. Inspired by your Fortnum & Mason purchases, I'm excited to see the store at the holidays.

For theater, I was debating whether to see The Weir, as I do love that playwright. The Donmar Warehouse has a comedy, When We Are Married, which will likely be well done, but the play doesn't interest me much. Othello also looks fantastic. I think I'll likely do that one as I've never seen that one live.

My hopes for lower hotel rates in the winter have been dashed, though. With my focus on theater, I've been looking at Soho/Covent Garden so I might walk back to the hotel, but my usual places are really pricey.

What are your thoughts on the weather in London that time of year? Chicago can be quite nice in December; things don't really turn grey and frigid until after the New Year.

Who the heck knows?! 😇 I'm very often in London at that time of year because I like to spend my birthday there. Could be absolutely anything (except beachy weather ;) ) I used to plan on taking my puffer coat but haven't really needed anything that warm except once or twice. Unless when I'm packing the night before flying out the weather report shows a really cold spell the puffer stays home. I usually take a rain/trench coat. I always assume there will be rain but I've only had rain maybe 2 days in the last 7 or 8 trips going back well before Covid. I've even eaten outside a few times. So -- Could be cold. Could be mild. Could be rain, Could be snow (not likely) Cold be sunny. Could be heavy clouds. Just plan on layers and you'll be fine.

I'll be ready for any weather! But with your frequent trips, gives me hope the weather will be a bit like Chicago's Decembers have been in the past decade or so--and not terrible. THinking my lighter, packable down coat will do.

Shrewsbury Hotel
 

Hello, ChgoGal, What fun to see a post about Shrewsbury! On our last visit to the UK we visited Shrewsbury for one night and wished we had stayed a little longer. As per my usual, I looked at many hotels and we stayed at the Lion + Pheasant and would recommend the hotel. We did have a car though, so I'm not sure about transportation to the hotel from the city center. We loved Shrewsbury and particularly loved visiting the filming sites for the Christmas Carol starring George C. Scott, a movie we watch every year. My husband and I were thrilled to visit the church where Scrooge's grave still lies.

We are visiting London for 3 weeks over a month in the country, giving us a chance to take our son on his first trip to Europe and to two of our favorite places, London and York. We have tickets to the Weir, Oliver, and the Nicola Walker play at the Royal Court. Also, tickets to a lunch time talk by Hugo Vickers about Cedric Gibbons and a talk by Jennie Beavan at the King's Gallery, regarding dress in the Edwardian period. Seriously considering the Marie Antoinette exhibit.

So glad to see a discussion about the weather. We haven't been to London in October for 20 years, so always wondering what jackets and coats to wear. Great to read your post, makes me even more excited for our trip in 3 weeks. We did not think we would be back to England for awhile, but our son convinced us that we were his guides for his first trip. So, have been closely reading posts on Fodor's from all you experts. Thank you!
