Should we visit Sorrento?
Hi,
We are going to be based in Positano while visiting Amalfi coast. I am wondering if Sorrento is worth a short day trip. Should we go or should we just relax in Positano? Thanks. |
Depends on what you want to see/do. When we visited Italy, we had a car so it made it easier to go between different locations. We stayed a few nights in Sorrento at the Hilton, where we had a view of Vesuvius from our room. We also used it as our base for getting to Capri and Pompeii. The lemon groves smelled wonderful as we walked down to the town for dinner each evening and joined the passagieta. My husband's favorite pizza place was in Sorrento - called the Fenix. We also stayed in Positano a couple nights and enjoyed just hanging out there. Our hotel was L'Ancora, next door to Le Sireneuse and less expensive for the same view. Anyway, what I guess I'm saying is both places have their merits. Other posters will have additional comments, I'm sure!

Why decide ahead of time? If you get restless in Positano, take a day trip.

No.

go.. it's delightful. See my recent trip report on the whole area.
But as one poster said, you don't have decide right now. But unlike some, I think Sorrento is great for more to do and with the right hotel choice, it's delightful. |
Hi k,
Buses run frequently between Sorrento and Salerno. Decide what to do after you get there. Have a nice visit. ((I)) |
Thanks for the information. For now we have plans to visit Sorrento provided the ferries are operating out of Positano.
|
I would stay in Sorrento and take the day trip to Positano. Positano is small and SO touristy. Sorrento is somewhat less commercial, bigger city (more to do) and the ferries leave from there to hop over to Capri.
|
Sorrento is less commercial than Positano? Not when we were there last fall.
Sorrento is worth a daytrip, but because, among other things, it is more commercial - i.e. more restaurants, shopping and more nocturnal activities than Positano. |
Sorrento also has a larger number of Irish/British pubs. That ought to be an inducement...

"Sorrento also has a larger number of Irish/British pubs. That ought to be an inducement..."
Or not. It is. in fact, one of my main objections to the otherwise non-descript town -- and I'll wager there are few who enjoy a pub more on their native soil. That, and the Brit biddies complaining that the eye-ties don't really do a nice tea . . . |
