should we take the train to florence?

my husband and i are going to italy leaving may 7 and returning may 19. we are excited. its our first time.we are staying in rome 3 nights and then renting a car to positano for two nights . should we then take the train to florence where we'll be for 3 nights or should we drive. can't decide what to do. when we leave florence we were going to drive back to rome by way of sienna, etc. thanks, becky

Why not drive from Positano up to Florence by way of Siena? Once you get to Florence you'll want to turn the car in; then it's an easy train trip back to Rome for your departure.
I suspect you already have your airline tickets, but if not plan an open jaw. Fly into Naples and out of Rome. From Naples go to Positano, drive up to Florence (as Tess suggested), drop your car and train back to Rome from where you will fly home. Would save you some time to sightsee rather than being on the road.

We just got back from those three places and took a driver from Positano to Naples, the Eurostar train from Naples to Florence and then on the last day the train from Florence to Rome.
By the way, theres a train also from the Rome train station directly to the airport and it only takes about 30 minutes.
Hi spidertlaw,

I'll be doing the same thing in the Fall.

Any suggestions about what to be aware of regarding the trains?

Hi Becky,

I suggest not renting a car.

You can take the train from Rome to Salerno (2 1/2 hr) and then the ferry from Salerno to Positano (1 hr).

Then follow Spider's plan to Florence. From Florence you can do day trips to Sienna, Lucca, Pisa and Bologna.
