Should We buy train tickets in Advance

We are traveling from Venice to Florence and then Florence to Rome the last week in March.

We are looking at ES trains.

Should we buy the tickets over the internet in advance or get them when we arrive?

Thanks

Jim

We bought them the day before and had no problems at all (just got back yesterday)

I'm no expert, but for straight-forward tickets (like the places you mention) I simply bought at the train station.

You wont have a problem buying tickets upon arrival.

Hi G,

If you know which trains you will want, you can save some time by buying in advance.

There are no discounts on those routes.

I agree with getting them when you arrive, especially if you are close to a rail station anyway.

You can also buy them through local travel agents in Italy.

Hi,

I generally book all hotels and ES transportation online before leaving for vacation purely for the convenience of keeping all of my printed confirmations in one notebook. I prefer to have everything taken care of before I leave - also you can select which seats you want online.

ES does not use actual tickets for internet booking. Merely the print-out with the confirmation number on it will suffice.

My husband and I booked a ES train in advance from Rome to Venice for our honeymoon and felt having this done in advance kept us from missing the train - all we had to do was board when we arrived. When they checked tickets, we just showed them the page in our notebook with the printed confirmation number on it.

Hope this helps - it is really just a matter of personal preference.

If you don't have much connection time it's a good idea to buy online. I make a quick connection often and would have missed a few trains if I hadn't. It's a good idea too during the high season to popular places for early morning and late evening train runs. Lots of day tourists on those.

Hi ,
I tried purchasing ES ticket on Trenitalia from Rome to Venice but the credit card does not go through.

The price is best on trenitalia would it change if buy at station? This is for 4th April.
Any suggestions?
