Should I buy tube/bus/rail passes for this trip?

Hi,

I have looked at the previous posts on Rail Passes in UK and am even more confused. Some say its good money other posters had bad experiences with it. I think it all depends on the individual's itinerary.

Would really appreciate some advice. So here's my itinerary for the UK.

London - 3 nights.
Brighton - 1 night
Bangor, North Wales - 3 nights

London - I will have 2 full days in London. Should I buy a daily Travel Card (tube+bus)? How many trips on the tube will warrant me buying a Travel card? How much is it? Or should I just rely on the carnet?

Brighton - London: I can either go on the Megabus which is max GBP6 return. Or take the train which is GBP32 return.

London - Bangor: It's GBP60.60 + GBP2 (tube)!! There are no advanced 14/7/3 day tickets available. Is there a chance that they will be resurfaced?

Should I just purchase the Youth consecutive 4 day BritRail Pass due to the heavy expense of my London - Bangor train journey?? Have tried www.railsaver and they say to buy the BritRail just on that journey trip alone.

Please advise.

Of course, whether you should get a rail pass depends on where you're going.
In central London, it's worth getting a travelcard if you do more than two tube journeys in a day. The travelcard also covers buses and gives a 33% discount on most boat trips on the Thames.
It doesn't cost £32 to get the train to Brighton - a five-day return seems to cost £21 according to www.thetrainline.com. Trains run frequently all day and take less than an hour whereas Megabus have a much more limited, less comfortable and slower service.

Thanks for link Geoff.

However, if I'm going to take the train for my return trip to Brighton, together with the single trip to Bangor, would it be advisable to buy the BritRail Youth 4 day consecutive Pass? Please advise.

Hi tiger,

Enter your itinerary at www.railsaver.com. Be sure to click "only if it saves me money".

Hi ira,

I've read this advice on your previous posts (before I posted my predicament) and did so. But its peculiar... Because when I just key in my single trip from London to Bangor which is GBP62.60 - Railsaver says that I should buy the BritPass for USD142!! Which is equivalent to GBP72. So am confused...

For your trip to Brighton don't rule out taking a National Express coach. There is frequent service, the economy return (roundtrip) ticket costs 15 GBP, and if you buy your ticket far enough ahead of time and "Funfare" seats are available, the cost will be only 1 GBP each way. Visit www.nationalexpress.com for the details.

You can check the prices of British train tickets on www.thetrainline.com or www.railsaver.com and you presumably have a price for a rail pass. Just compare the two and make a decision.

Thanks for the funfare tip, TimS. Might just do that.

Hi tiger,

Odd. When I entered London/Bangor at www.railsaver.com it told me that it didn't recognize Bangor, Wales.

I entered London/Cardiff and it came up with "purchase ticket for $132".

For the round trip, it says to purchase the 4-day youth pass.

Have decided not to take the BritRail Pass.

Will be taking the London - Brighton return trip by either Megabus or National Express. And pay GBP60.60 for the London - Bangor trip by train. Hopefully, they would release extra Advanced 14/7/3 day tickets in the interim, but not holding my breath. =p

Thanks for everyone's help
