Should I buy a DVD or an SD card for Europe maps for Garmin

We are going to Italy next spring and plan to rent a car. We have driven there in the past but only with paper maps. We have a Garmin GPS which accepts Europe maps. I am getting ready to order the maps from Garmin and have read several reviews of pros and cons about getting the card already loaded versus buying the DVD and loading maps on an SD card. Since I trust Fodorites for other aspects of my trip planning, I am wondering if some of you would weigh in with an opinion on this one before I actually place my order. Thank you.

If you buy a DVD won't you also have to buy a blank SD to plug into the GPS? Either that, or use the existing SD card, but swap map files by copying the US maps onto our computer.

I'm not a Garmin expert, but it seems to me an SD card that you can just pop in would be easier.

I have updated Garmin European map online. It took at least 4 hrs. I think the DVD saves the download time, but I think you still have to go through the slow process of loading the GPS.

Yes, using the DVD does mean that I will have to load everything, but I am wondering if working on routes ahead of time would be easier if I have it on the computer. We already have SD cards that have enough space for it. Thank you for the responses. ees12, I will check out the web site you sent.

Can you not just download the maps directly onto your Garmin?

I was able to do that for France.

I did it recently - I needed a mini-SD card (note the difference!) and downloaded the maps to it from the Garmin website. I could pre-program the destinations ahead of time, but I was too lazy and did it when we got there.

Overall, I was pretty happy with it (I had a separate thread about it).

I bought a used sd card on ebay for 45.00. It was the most recent edition, loaded into my gps no problem. I haven't preloaded many addresses yet, but for the money I thought it was a pretty good deal.

If you buy the DVD, you have a back-up if you lose/trash the SD card.
