Should I brave a crowded fest?
I'm planning a trip through Provence in May, and based on many Fodorite comments I hoped to visit the Camargue on my way from Arles to Montpellier. I was going to drive through on Monday, May 23, until I discovered the annual Gypsy pilgrimage occurs on the 24th and 25th. Yikes! Thousands of people will descend on the peaceful nature preserve I envisioned -- but I must admit, it sounds like a really interesting event. Do you think I should give it a try, or possibly wait until the festival is over on the 26th? Thanks!

The focus of the festival is the town of Stes-Marie-de-la-Mer, not in the Camargue.

Aha! So what would you recommend -- should I stay away from Saintes Marie de la Mer or head south to check it out?

I think if you have taken your vitamins and your energy shake you should go for it. I really liked Ste Marie de la Mar when it wasn't crowded but I can hardly imagine the scene during a Gypsy pilgrimage. (leave your purse at the hotel!)
Better yet, judge when you get there re traffic, etc. |
Yeah, I think for once in my life I should probably wing it. The worst that could happen is we'd have to turn around and head to Aigues-Mortes!

Great! Full report please!!
I think it is a once in a life thing too, kind of like Carnivale in Rio. If you can climb up to the top of the church and view the action from above. |
