Have you already looked for schedules at www.bahn.de? It might answer all your questions.

And please just answer within the thread, don't start a new thread just to answer - it makes your replies hard to find ...

Yes, just click on "Post a Reply" to answer.

To get the bahn.de site in English, click on "Internat. Guests."

Then go under "Planning Your Journey" click on Timetable Information.

Just briefly I went onto the site for you and found several trains from Munchen Hbf (the main train station) to Rothenburg ob der Tauber Bahnhof.

They range from about 2-1/2 hours to 3-1/2 hours and require two to three change of trains.

If you are taking the train you will have to change trains a couple of times to get there.

If you are driving see ViaMichelin.com and you can plan your trip on the autobahn or on the Romantic Road. If you choose the Romantic road then "short and fast" may not be your first consideration.

The fastest and most direct route is the underground tube that takes 105 minutes with one transfer at Ingoldstadt. Tickets are available adjacent track (gleis) 17 at the Munich Hauptbanhof. Ask for Rolf.

We are doing a driving trip in Germany and Austria this fall. We are going thru http://www.driveeurope.com, check it out, very helpful. We decided to drive from Munich to Rothenburg because of the difference in airfare, arriving and departing from Munich was much less for us, I believe the driving time was only about an hour longer. On the above site they have a Romantic Road driving trip, includes, car and hotel plus some extras.

We did this a couple of years ago. We used the quickest route option at viamichelin.com and it took 2 hours and 15 minutes (it was 138 miles). The website estimated 2 hours and 20 minutes. So it was pretty close. But it depends on your driving style and the road conditions on the particuar day you do your drive.

The shortest route is estimated at 3 hours (128 miles).

Of course the time we took all day to drive up the Romantic Road from Hohenschwangau to our castle hotel in Colmberg (just east of Rothenburg) was a more enjoyable drive with several stops (planned and unplanned) along the way.
