short visit to scotland from london

we are four couples wanting to take the train to edinburgh from london for about 3 days. can anyone recommend one day tours like timberbush or can travel to the highlands, loch ness etc. be done on our own. also is it possible to exit the train in york and pick up another one in a couple of hours to edinburgh.

thanks for any advice.

There are a number of tour companies which can provide, one day, two day or three day tours from Edinburgh.

I know that Rabbies has a good three day tour to Skye http://www.rabbies.com/scottish_tour...3_day_tour.asp
and you could possibly join that if you take the overnight sleeper to Edinburgh to start the tour early on your arrival.

The others would include Timberbush as you mention.

Macbackpackers www.macbackpackers.com

Scotline Tours www.scotlinetours.co.uk

Highland Experience www.highlandexperience.com

Heart of Scotland tours www.heartofscotlandtours.co.uk

All have reviews listed on tripadvisor and also appear on this forum

Yes, you can get off in York and back on the next train.

If you email me I'll send you a doc of day trips you can do from Edinburgh on the train

If you've paid for a ticket that allows a break of journey - the cheap tickets require you to get specific trains, so unless you buy separate tickets for London to York and York to Edinburgh you won't be able to break your trip

Yes - please note alanRow's post. You cannot automatically just get off a train in York and then resume your journey to Edinburgh.

If you book far enough ahead you can get really REALLY cheap fares. But you would need to book London to York and, separately, York to Edinburgh.

If you pay a full fare "any time" ticket, then yes you could break your journey. But they will be much more expensive.
